Tabonos (horseflies), fly fishing, and my itinerary????

We (husband, 10 year old daughter and myself) will be arriving Puerto Varas on Dec 25. We wanted to do some fly fishing and nature exploring, as well as see some of the area and the towns. We will be coming from Torres del Paine and Chalten after a ten day visit in that area. I was originally thinking about Varas for five nights and then another area for three nights. Originally I had though about going down to Cochamo/Puelo but then I read about the horseflies. So then I was wondering if they are as bad around the Huilo Huilo area? I am thinking they aren't going to be bad around Varas, will they? Should we forget any of the areas closer to the Andes and think about Chiloe, even though that was not as high on my list?

Thanks!

Tábanos or coliguachos are around from the end of December to mid-January (timing and numbers can vary a bit from year to year) and are just part of life at that time of year in the south, including Puerto Varas. Some say don't wear blue, some say don't wear yellow. They like hot sunny days and to be near water and are around less in the early morning. Trout like to eat them, which is good if you like to fish.

I wouldn't cancel a holiday because of them. They are no worse than mosquitos, bigger and easier to swat and don't carry any diseases.

definitely don't wear yellow!

and yes, there are much fewer specimens around Puerto Varas during the peak days of the bugs than in Petrohue/Cochamo

Will insect repellent like 100% DEET work?

BTW how windy is it at Puerto Varas around Christmas time?

Christmas is not an unusually windy time of year in Puerto Varas.

though weather in the south is never a certain thing

according to www.gaisma.com/en/location/puerto-montt.html

there are only 3 "wet"days in December,

sounds about right
