Extra day in Bariloche or Puerto Montt

We will be in the Lake District in over New Year's and have only a few days.I don't see much to do in Puerto Montt so do you think it is better to add an extra day in Barioche if we can?

Puerto Montt is not a tourist destination really as it is a large port. Puerto Varas is 20 minutes away and is on a lake with views of Osorno volcano. There are plenty of activities in the area. There are plenty of other nice places in the lake district; Puerto Varas, Pucón, Frutillar etc.

We were there in December 09 and Jan 2010, and recommend staying in bariloche. There is heaps to do: hiking, bike riding, kayaking, fishing, horse riding. It's the gate way to Patagonia. However, it was freezing so you need good gear or you can buy it there. There's also heaps of Swiss chocolate to eat.

Puerto montt is just a boring port and nothing interesting to do.

it kind of depends on how you would get to Bariloche,

if you have a few days, one of the most beautiful ways is the Andes Lake crossing.

it will also allow you to kill two birds with one stone, seeing both the Chilean and Argentinean side, and all the most spectacular scenery of the X region lake district.

the other options such as flying are not convenient as there is not a direct flight from Puerto Montt to Bariloche, and overland is at least 6 hours, probably more given that January is peak season in Argentina.

Puerto Montt, as stated in other responses, is not worth the time, it could be a great place for its surroundings and geography, but unfortunately it did not develop with any urban planning in mind.

Puerto Varas, Frutillar, Puerto Octay on the other hand, are important destinations for their beauty and activities available, especially during the summer months of December, January, February, and March.

you can investigate these places on the internet, and find abundant info.
