trip help!!

Hi All,

I need some help/ideas/suggestions for an upcoming trip to Brazil.

Some background info.- in 2010, my girlfriend and I went to South Africa for a cycling trip that included the World Cup. We are not big football fans but we absolutely loved the experience...so much so-we decided to attend World Cup 2014 in Brazil. Generally, I`m very comfortable planning our vacations- I have the time-I enjoy doing it- it saves us money and I`m good at it. Brazil, however, is a tad different. The road network doesn`t look good for road cycling, like Europe,USA, or even South Africa. However, with enough planning I feel confident we can carve out a cycling holiday with 2014 World Cup.

Here is how we do our "normal" cycling holidays:

-time-frame is about 3 weeks

-get rental car at airport and keep it for whole trip

-we bring our bicycles with us from home(USA-Florida)

-stay in 4/5 hotels-4/5 nights at each hotel

-we do loop rides from our hotels-35 to 60 miles a day

-when we move from hotel to hotel-I try to keep the drive time to no more than 3 hours

With that background-here are my preliminary thoughts/ideas for Brazil:

-2014 World Cup starts-June 12th and ends July 13th

-we fly into Rio and then take another flight to Curitiba-around June 14th

-pick up rental car at airport and stay in/around Curitiba for a week and see 2 Cup Matches(June16th and June20th)

-drive to Florianopolis and stay for 4/5 days

-drive to another area(???) for 4/5 days

-drive to another area(???), not to far from Curitiba airport for 3/4 days

-drive to airport and head home

Another idea would be to fly to Porto Alegre rather than Curitiba and veiw 2 Matches and go from there. I`m not a big city guy, so I would rather not get involved with Rio/Sao.

What do you think of my plan? Thanks a lot.

Your plan is ambitious, but I suspect it’s not particularly doable. The roads in Brazil are generally not very good, and the drivers are some of the worst in the world—plus, there’s a great deal of poverty in the country and attendant criminality.

Have you thought about cycling in Uruguay, Brazil's neighbor? It’s fairly flat (and safe) country, the roads are in good shape, and the scenery is spectacular. (Just a suggestion.)

I would not ride a bike on the streets of Brazil that I have seen. Those potholes are insane, so are the drivers. Probably want to postpone those plans for 2 years and visit Euro 2016 in France.

Hello,

I think your plan is good, but you have to remember that Brazil is as big as the USA, so a 3h drive its not a very comfortable time to achieve. For example the distance between the main cities are:

Curitiba - Foz do Iguaçu = 637 km (400 mi)

Curitiba - Florianopolis = 300 km (190 mi)

Florianopolis - Porto Alegre = 476 km (300 mi)

Porto Alegre - Curitiba = 711 km (450 mi)

The Iguaçu Falls are really far away but no doubt its worth it.

The roads between these cities are good (with tolls), but there are a lot of heavy trucks, turns and hills, so you can´t drive so fast as on a US freeway. Also the road speed limit is 80 to 110 km/h (50 to 70 mi/h).

Near Curitiba I suggest you take the train tour Serra Verde Express and also look for Ilha do Mel (Honey Island). Another fine place to see near Curitiba is the Vila Velha Park at Ponta Grossa (100 km / 60 mi).

On your way to Florianopolis and Porto Alegre you have plenty of wonderfull beaches (Bombinhas, Porto Belo, Laguna, Guarda do Embaú) and cities (Caxias do Sul, Gramado, Canela, São Joaquim), look for some pictures on the internet, all of them are great places to see.

Regards!
