Im planning to travel through the Philippines later on this year. I have been reading on the British consulate website that it can be quite a dangerous place.

Can anyone sugest a good place to get up to the date travel information on certain places.

The route i would like to follow is starting in Manila and traveling south. If its still possible i would like to travel by boat from somwhere in the southern philippines into Borneo.

Any info would be much apreciated

Here's one possible itinerary:

Visayas

Manila-Boracay

Boracay-Cebu

Cebu-Panglao (thru Tagbilaran)

Tagbilaran-Ormoc

Ormoc-Tacloban

Tacloban-Calicoan (Guiuan, Eastern Samar)

back to Tacloban

Tacloban-Surigao

Mindanao

Surigao-Butuan-Cagayan de Oro-Iligan-Zamboanga

Zamboanga-General Santos-Davao

There is a route from Zamboanga to Isabela City in Basilan

Basilan-Sulu-Tawi-tawi.

There is boat serving Tawi-tawi to Sandakan (in North Borneo) but travelling by boat is not a good idea especilly for foreigners.

I suggest you buy a map about $2.50 so you will be familiar with the provinces and cities here.

Traveling in the Philippines is safe for anyone. As most people in this forum have said, it's always best to travel with caution as you would in any foreign country.

I just would not suggest travel to the Mindanao area. But if you know someone from the area, maybe it will be ok to travel to Mindanao. It would be best to travel in the Luzon & Visayas areas, although Mindanao is a beautiful place to visit.

True, the Philippines has a travel advisory both US and British Government, so with Israel, Egypt, Thailand, Indonesia and other countries. Despite these travel advisories people still travel to Israel were bombs explode every year. It is just unfortunate that foreign countries exaggerate their travel advisories. Thought I would admit that Mindanao especially the southern most parts like Basilan and Tawi Tawi Islands are definetly off limits to foreign tourists because of the insurgency problems. Northern and Eastern Mindanao are safe to local and foreign tourists (check map of the Philippines). I am not sure if Davao City which is the biggest city in Mindanao has trips going to Borneo. Try inquiring on Zamboanga City.
