The trend thus far in 2012 has been for foreign tourist arrivals into Philippines to show excellent growth early in the year that has then dramatically tapered off.
The September 2012 figures show an overall rise of just 2.7 per cent, although it is reasonable in comparison to other nearby economies such as Vietnam where tourism arrivals have declined in at least one recent month.
Into Philippines, malaysia (36.1 per ccent) and Hong Kong (31.9 per cent) showed good growth but with the political 'spat over the Spratlys', mainland Chinese arrivals dropped 18.9 per cent as did overall arrivals from Western Europe:
Arrivals should still easily reach four million for 2012 but let's hope for a stronger relative performance in December in particular. One of the keys will be any glimmers of good economic news coming out of the USA as many potential visitors will have already decided or be quickly about to decide whether to travel for Christmas.
