JR Pass for Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka

Hello all, I will be flying into Tokyo (17th October) and also departing (25th October) from Tokyo.

Will be planning to spend sometime in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.

I'm confused with the JR Passes and would appreciate some help. Should I get the regional JR passes, and if so which one should I be getting. Or should I be getting the nation-wide JR pass?

Any other relevant tips would be great too. I am planning this rather last minute. thanks!

We need your complete day by day itinerary, including arrival and departure airports in order to suggest the pass options for you.

Meanwhile - www.japan-guide.com/railpass = rail pass calculator.

The 7 day JR Pass costs 29,110 yen, while it costs @14,000 yen/@14,500 yen by standard JR tickets from Tokyo to Kyoto/Osaka oneway. Thus, the 7 day JR Pass pays off if you round trip Kyoto/Osaka from Tokyo and make an additional day trip. If you don't step by somewhere, such as Hakone or Kawaguchiko, and if you round trip Kyoto/Osaka, alternative way is to buy the discount round trip E-vouchers of Japanican, which cost 22,600 yen/23,000 yen for round trip to Kyoto/Osaka, as follows.

Here is its Application Form.

You have to exchange your E-voucher to your Shinkansen tickets at JR Tokai's Office at Tokyo or Shinagawa Stations at their business hours written here.

You can use the 7 day JR pass for the return trip back to the airport. That along with the Tokyo-Kyoto round trip makes it a better value.

Assuming that you're staying in Tokyo first, activate the JR pass when you depart Tokyo for Kyoto. Then the pass will cover all of your long distance train travel + the return to the airport.

N'Ex return ticket Y4000 - and that is certainly not the cheapest option.

Tokyo-Kyoto Y13,000 *2

Basic cost Y30,000 more than 7-day JRP

Because you are changing regions the regional passes do not work. However, you can also get the discount e-voucher ticket from Japanican and that makes the tickets cheaper than the 7-day rail pass. (23k+4k)
