Mount Kerinci climb and safety

Hi All,

I have read reports by the "Pusat Vulkanologi" (Volcanology Centre) Indonesia, in particular their latest post on the subject matter on 27 December 2008 that climbing and going near the crater at the summit is not allowed.

I have plans to do Kerinci. have I misinterpreted the 'warning'? What is the current status? Is it safe to trek and summit the volcano as of today?

Can anyone who has information or who have been there recently please help.

Thanks.

Hi Footyboy,

I just contact my Friend who live at Kersik Tuo, He said that is correct Pusat Vulkanologi announce do not going near the Crater at the summit, but it doesn't mean stop climb the Kerinci.

some time the mount explode the Brimstone Gas or we call here "Gas Belerang"

that way before climb we will see the wind direction to get on top, some time crater have gas "Belerang or Brimstone".

We can say no problem to anyone who like to climb Kerinci for now.

Thanks for reassuring news. Does this mean that climbers can still reach the summit/top as long as they stay away from the crater rim? Thanks in advance.

FootyboyMalaysia,

What date do you go?

Wow, that time has come along quickly. It only seems like yesterday you were asking for information.

Have a wonderful wonderful trip and I hope you will be able to climb.

I checked Volcano live website by John Seach the Australian world authority on volcaanoes and trips but he does not have any information about the the new activity.

http://www.volcanolive.com/kerinci.html

However, he may not be up to date because he may be taking travellers on a volcano trip.

Warriors of wind,

FootyboyMalaysia hopefully will get back to us soon with his report from his March trip he recently did to Kerinci.

I have another report from Thorn Tree you might like to read where a guide's name is mentioned.

Hi Pamela and all,

Yes I am back from Sumatra/Kerinci trip. My computer packed up the day after my return 3 weeks ago and I had just gotten round to repairing it over last weekend. I have loads to report and am still compiling my notes but first, for the benefit of WoW and others.

I was also quite concerned about the volcano prior to my departure but it turned out ok. There is indeed a post on the Indonesia Volcanolgy centre in December against going near the crater at the summit but it was ok. The vapour was white and not black.

Pak Subandi is THE man in Kersik Tuo village, the place where you use as your base for your trek. His homestay is on the main road whereas we stayed away from the main road. We used his place for arranged dinners anyway.

There is this guide who is a bit of a 'legend'. En Datno is his name. He is called "En". My son asked him if he was THE 'En Datno' during our climb and he acknowledged. Our trip was his 255th trip up Kerinci. He seems to know every nook and corner of the trail.

Enjoyed every bit of the trek and we were the only ones doing the trek up at the time. It rained like anything on the first day. Waterproofs are a must. I will post a report soon. In the meantime, please let me know if anyone needs any help.

regards.

Footyboy,

Thanks for your reply. I have put the link to this post on Lonely Planet Thorn Tree Indonesia forum on end of a post on travelling in Indonesia mentioning the Kerinci area.

Woould appreciate if you could put the link up to your report on this thread so travellers reading on LP will get to see your report link first hand.

Really really looking forward to your report.

Pamela
