Hi Katie,

From KL you can get a flight into Medan North Sumatra, possibly with AirAsia.

From Medan you can get a 4 hr bus from Pinang Baris bus terminal to take you to Bukit Lawang to see the orangutans on a trek.

Or if yuo ask around you can possibly get a air con Kijang with driver for about 350,000 rupiah and yuo will get there in about 3hrs.

My 19 day visit in Jan/Feb 2005 photos travel.webshots.com/album/354912564dvtkJh

showing my trek in the jungle looking for orangutans. I only saw one, but then I am the most unlucky person when it comes to seeing orangutans.

I wasn't even lucky in Ketambe in south Aceh in Nov 2006.

Besides going on a trek yuo can also go to the feeding platform twice a day and seeing the feeding of the rehabilitated orangutans.

Once in Bukit Lawang you can get an ojek(rider and motor bike) to take you down to Tangkahan- 2hrs away a paradise in the jungle, stay at Jungle Lodge and enjoy this magic place.

I spent 5 days there in September 2006.

Have a read of the many reports written on Sumatra in this link

Myself and a lot of other travellers have contributed to these reports.

Another informative website on Bukit Lawang is this one http://tinyurl.com/38e37o

Or if you want to join a group of young travellers on a group trek then contact Romi or Wanda at this website.

I have known these guys for about 3 years now- they live in Bukit Lawang and can imagine you would have so much fun on one of these tours, camping out in the jungle, sitting around a camp fire.

You are welcome to contact me if you wish through the Private Message.

hi Katie, I would recommend flying into Medan then taking the bus / private driver to Bukit lawang. We did a 2 day overnight trek and saw loads of orangs but admittedly all in the first few hours and it was no walk in the park it's pretty hard going but then I'm not fit so you could be fine.

best advice on Bukit Lawang is proabbly from Pamela but I could give you the contact details for the guide we used if you're interested (be advised they prefer payment in euros for the trek for some strange reason)

Lake Toba - Samosir was beautifull and would definitely recommend fitting it into your itinery. Bukkittingi was interesting but the weather was terrible.

If you decide on Samosir or Bukittingi and need some more info just ask and i'll try to help

You'll have a great time the Sumatrans are lovely!

Hi Katie,

Are you still reading this forum? Did you get to go to Bukit Lawang?

I am just back from 27 days in Indonesia and spent a week in Bukit Lawang.

Would love to hear how you went.

Pamela
