Is it worth it to spend a day in Jakarta?

My husband and I got a great deal on a flight, and will be flying from Chicago to Jakarta (with a layover in Tokyo), arriving in Jakarta at 11:30 PM.

We plan on moving onto Bali eventually, but we where wondering if Jakarta is worth a visit for a day or two, or if we should move on straight away to Bali? Or are there any other regions within an hour or two from the Jakarta airport that are worth a visit?

I should note that we do not like shopping malls (have enough of them in the US), theme parks or museums, instead we tend to like outdoor activities like hiking, swimming, etc.

Jakarta us a huge business and government oriented city snd from your description you will not find any thing to enjoy in Jakarta. You might enjoy a couple of days in other parts of Java such as Jogja and Solo, or a trip to Bromo in East Java. There are a lot of outdoor activities to enjoy in Bali so hope you enjoy your trip!

asformeiamok, hi

Proceed straight to Bali with the quickest possible flight. You`ll not find anything for you liking in here........... JKT is a total waste of time unless you have business in here, visit relatives etc.

There are some exotic restaurants (such as Lara Djonggrang) and Luwak Café (the most expensive civet coffee) that you should not miss. Try also to visit Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (Indonesian Miniature Park, but not Madurodam) where you can see traditional houses and even see some traditional dances on Sunday morning.

You should also visit Bogor Botanical Gardens, about 1-2 hours car from Jakarta, where you can see the biggest flower in the world (Rafflesia arnoldii) or the highest flower in the world (Amorphophallus titanum). Then continue to tea plantation in the mountain high around Puncak or even better in the city of Sukabumi.

If it's too late to go back to Jakarta in the afternoon, you can spend a night in Bandung city and take the first flight to Bali the following night. The bamboo musical performance "angklung" at Saung Udjo is one of a kind.

Hi, looks like we got the same deal, only we are flying from Dallas :) When are you arriving to Jakarta? Are you planning on staying in Java before going to Bali? This is what we are doing.

IMO, it's good if you wanna visit Jakarta only 1-2 days. you may learn the portray of Indonesia in general and you can see the entire Indonesia only in one place - Taman Mini Indonesia Indah.

Yes if u're rich and want to see the craziest traffic jam in the world. If u arrive at 11.30 pm, there won't be any traffic so grab a cab, go to the center of Jakarta (Bundaran HI), stay one night at Kempinsky Hotel or Hyatt or Pullman or Mandarin Oriental Hotel as these are the 5-stars hotels around the Bundaran HI. You will experience traffic from early in the morning, until late in the evening SAFELY (as long as u don't go on vehicles). There are many shopping malls, and they are huge, nothing in comparison to US (I've been to LA) on the area. The 5-stars hotels are quite cheap compare to Tokyo, it's probably only around USD 250 (standard room). But if u dont want to see traffic jam then by all means, dont come here. Sorry to say but Jakarta has nothing to be bragged about compare to ur country.
