Driving from the airport in Jakarta to.....

We arrive at 15h45 in Jakarta. We have a rental car ,so where is a nearby beachside location that is reachable given this arrival time, including restaurant and a place to stay the night. We don't want to stay in the big busy center.

You have very few options and they are all not good.

I am not sure why you are flying into Jakarta if you want to be near a beach. The beaches that are close to the city (drivable time considering you arre landing in late afternoon and driving a rental car. ) would only be in Carita or Thousand Islands and I think it would be too far for you to go, and quite possibly not what you would expect of a beach holiday.

If you have business in the city next day, and need to stay closer by, you could look at Ancol whcih is still within city limits...it's an amusement park area ...there are some cottages there and restaurants. But I would strongly recommend you just hire a taxi like silver Bird, as traffic is really terrible and the streets are an impenetrable maze with no rhyme or reason.

If you are looking for a relaxing beach holiday try to re-think your destination.

Good luck!

Depends on your purpose for travel though??

If you want a nice beachside location, then Jakarta is not the place for you.. The beach near Jakarta is highly polluted even Ancol.. have a look at Bali or Lombok..

FOr the beachside location in Jakarta.. From the airport to Ancol (within city limit) approx 45min to 1 hour plus.. depending on the traffic condition..

However, if your purpose to Jakarta is on business.. Always stay closest to the workplace.. You will be glad you did.. due to the traffic condition here..

Hope this helps..

Hello Swiss!!

1/ First of all if you fly to Jawa in pursuit of beach vacation, you fly the WRONG way. And all your effort is in vain. People who live on Java have to travel to the DIFFERENT ( read islands) places if we seek nice beach and swimmable water. Usually we go to Lombok, Bali or Gili........... Beaches on Java are a joke with post apocalyptic ( quoting: JH) industrial landscape, petrol stains on the sand and zero tourist facilities. Better avoid.

2/ <<We have a rental car >>

Do you mean you gonna self-drive on Java???? This is the SECOND worst travel decision you are going to make. For people who have no experience with driving in Indonesia hiring a car + driver is the only sane option. All others are suicidal. Reasons: conditions of roads, lack of accurate travel maps, lack of road signs, local traffic peculiarities, lack of knowledge of places to avoid, lack of knowledge of possible times to travel ( and stay at home) etc etc etc. LANGUAGE barrier. Local people in general do not have even rudimentary English in their pocket, but on the question * do you speak english*, everyone will answer * YES*.

3/ CONCLUSION: if you purpose of visit CGK is only leisure and beach vacation, BETTER reconsider the place. If you have any other reason, please let us know, w`ll advice you accordingly............

Indonesia is not one big resort.....................

Thanks for the info. Can we can get a flight directly to Bali or other guaranteed beautiful spots from Jakarta.?And are there cheap airline offers(like EasyJet, JetStar etc?) What would be an estimate of the price and what are the airline names. Appreciate your concern for us to have a good holiday. Am cancelling the hire car in Jakarta. Sounds like suicide to drive there....

1/ <<Can we can get a flight directly to Bali>>

Sure - 100%....What`s your starting point????? - GVA??? ZRH???Different?

2/ <<And are there cheap airline offers(like EasyJet, JetStar etc?) >>

YEP, we have some budget carriers operating in the region, say Air Asia Indonesia ( QZ). But beter arrange a direct flight from Europe to DPS ( Bali airport), avoiding connection in CGK ( Jakarta airport).

3/ << What would be an estimate of the price and what are the airline names. >>

Name of your starting point??????

4/ << Am cancelling the hire car in Jakarta. Sounds like suicide to drive>>

GOOD.. you have our point noted.

Thanks alot for your time and patience, Schonefeld !

We must thank you for avoiding a complete dissappointing outcome in attempting to have a holiday in Jakarta and Drive-Java. As our flights were already booked through Emirates we could not cancel without a cancel fee, so have found this morning connecting flights to Bali on Asian Air for a decent price (104€ per person return)

Any tips on the best spots in Bali, and is it a good thing to rent a car there? How far is Lombok from Bali by car, and is that interesting to do the drive?

On our return leg we'll have from midday to midnight in Jakarta, so intend to spend the day to see the city anyway. Would kindly recommend your advice on what we should see. Is the Zoo good? Any old ships and history in the port?

Thanks again, (did you know your Trip advisor name means "beautiful field" in German?)

1/ << (did you know your Trip advisor name means "beautiful field" in German?)>>

Frankly speaking i have serious doubts about THAT....LOL..but schöne Feld is indeed a field that`s not that ugly.

2/ <<Any tips on the best spots in Bali, and is it a good thing to rent >>

Please address this question to Bali forum, it`s THEIR prerogative to advice on such matters.

4/ <<Is the Zoo good?>>

No no no no...avoid if you care to preserve your mental stability.

5/ <<Any old ships and history in the port?>>

In the equatorial climate any building does not age well, keeping any house or wooden artifact ( say ship) etc intact for more than 25 years is a challenge, buildings that are 50 y/o or more are probably 4-5 in the whole city. So... historically speaking JKT is a poor architectural place. But we have few sights worth visiting for a glimpse of colonial history etc. They are all listed in things to do.

Thanks once again! You are very conscientious with your replies, even on a weekend and you will go down in History as being the person responsible for alerting us to avoid Jakarta and a holiday disaster!!

I learnt German at school in Brisbane(not the best place to become fluent in German) but i do remember the word "schöne" and it DOES mean beautiful!

So as for our 1/2 day in Jakarta my daughter would like to fill her empty suitcase with great bargains (Brand name stuff , clothes, bags, shoes, etc) so can you recommend a place not to miss in Jakarta for that?

What else to see or do that is unique to Jakarta???

For fashion shopping and designer labels, if you happen to stay in city center, proceed to visit Plaza Indonesia and Grand Indonesia. On both malls, you can sample what Jakarta upscale shopping is all about. For souvenir shopping, head to either Alun-Alun at Grand Indonesia or Sarinah department store.

Things to do in Jakarta (not for your daughter who likes to shop): museums and old town square of Old Batavia is a highlight. National Monument is the symbol of the city, visitor can take elevator to observatory level above to get bird's eye view of the city. Those two are good enough for half day trip plus the shopping.
