Can't decide where to stay (Purpose of trip: Shopping)

Hi

Would like your recommendation on where to stay in Jakarta? Have read so much about shopping in Mangga Dua area but it is quite far from the rest of the other places in jakarta, right?

Our purpose is to shop for clothes (mid range) and bags. Good quality also. What is the recommended shopping malls and any hotels nearby. We do not prefer to take taxi due to the congested traffic. Our budget on hotel is around USD50 per night only.

Also, we would like to take a day tour, what is the recommended tour to take? What is the price?

Thanks

Hi,

Well I don't know if I would say if Mangga Dua is far from everything else in Jakarta, but if everything you want to do is in that area then you may as well there.

There are a number of hotels in your price range in the area. Probably the best is the Novotel Mangga Dua. It is located above Mangga Dua Square Mall which is also a good place to shop. Other good place for shopping in the area include:

Mall Mangga Dua, WTC Mangga Dua and the Pasar Pagi Complex. They are all within a 1km radius of each other.

Another hotel you could consider include Hotel Orchidz.

As far tours, have a look at this site: www.grayline.com

They operate a couple of different tours of the city but they aren't cheap.

Greyline tour is highly recommended as it is conducted by English speaking guide and come from reputable company. Price is just like you book a tour by MAS' Golden Holiday.

Hotel Orchardz are within your budget. You can take bajaj to the mangga dua wholesale center.

If you have more budget, try Ibis Mangga Dua, just at the doorstep of Mangga Dua wholesale center.

P.S. although 1km seems not far, but you also have to deal with those exhaust smoke from vehicles passing by and also most street in Jakarta is not pedestrian friendly.

For mid range clothing item, you can go to Matahari Department Store or Centro Department Store (that's moreover like Metrojaya or Parkson). You can find the nearby Matahari department store at Pasar Baru (about 15 mins ride from mangga dua).

Thanks for all the recommendation. I found a hotel within my budget. Ibis Tamarin, is there shopping within walking distance from this hotel? We prefer malls instead of wholesale centres.

Ibis Tamarind is a right choice. It's in the city center. Just few hundred meters you'll find Sarinah Department Store (that's the 1st modern shopping center ever built in Jakarta). Now it's just mid-range dept store, but its famous for the whole floor selling batiks and handicrafts. Also located in the same building is Manchester United Cafe.

Just hop onto the transjakarta busway (1 station away) and you'll find 2 big malls; Plaza Indonesia and Grand Indonesia. Both are upscale and you can find everything designer-ish, from Versace to Boss also other international brand such as Zara, GAP, Ted Barker, etc.

Other shopping malls that are just within walking distance from busway stops (please see transjakarta busway map from wikipedia for exact route). These are all within the station that lies in the same line from Ibis Tamarin (Corridor 1: Blok M to Kota)

1. Pasaraya Blok M (station: Blok M)

also big shopping mall, same owner like Sarinah, but sell more variety products.

2. Plaza Senayan (station: Bundaran Senayan)

This is also an upscale shopping mall with 2 anchor department store. Just across the street is Senayan City, another newer rival in high-end shopping.

3. Pacific Place Mall (station: Polda Metro)

New upscale shopping mall, if you have kids, Kidzania is a great play-ground, not all shops has been opened as it is relatively new.

4. Plaza Semanggi (station: Bendungan Hilir)

Walk pass the university complex and you'll find this mall selling mostly mid-priced items. Popular with university students next door.

5. Chinatown (station: Glodok)

Not a shopping mall, but who knows you're interested to see what's on in Jakarta's chinatown. Also a famous electronic bargain center.

Hi,

Jakarta is not a great city for walking but from the Ibis Thamrin you are 5 minutes walk to two large department stores, Sarinah and Java, and 15ish minutes walk to two large upmarket malls, Plaza Indonesia and Grand Indonesia.

The nearest Transjakarta station to Ibis Tamarin is SARINAH STATION. It's just in front of Sarinah Department Store.

Tickets must be purchased at the counter in each station. Rp3,500 per trip (no matter how long is your trip). No stored value ticket available, so you need to buy ticket each time you want to rise it.

It's quite different from other public buses (not like rapidKL), it has its own lane, the bus is air-coned but the station is not. During the peak hours, it can get very crowded, so always keep an eye on all your belongings.

Other public buses will share the lane with common vehicles, but the condition is far from what rapidKL is.

Plan to go to Mangga Dua for half a day. Is there any TransJakarta to that area?

Yes, there is one. But it's not stop in front of the wholesale center (it stops at Mangga Dua Square, a new modern shopping complex that resembles the wholesale center, but many shops still closed) and if you go with transjakarta it will take longer time as you need to circle around.

My suggestion:

1. Take transjakarta to JAKARTA KOTA STATION. From there there take the baby blue-coloured UNSER (we called it KIJANG here) which is the public van. It's a short ride from there, pay around Rp2,000 per person, and you will stop at the doorstep of the wholesale center.

2. Take taxi directly from your hotel. It's not that far and if there are more than 3 people with you, it's cheaper to use taxi and more comfortable than using public transport.

P.S. Mangga Dua is a stretch of road. If you're coming from the west, you will see the wholesale center first (which consists of 4 main shopping center interconnecting with each other; ITC, pasar pagi, Mall Mangga Dua, and Harco. The first 2 mostly sell fashion stuff, while the last 2 sell electronics). On the other end of the road is Mangga Dua Square (around 1km walk, but mind you no/little pedestrian). It's just like walking from 1Utama to IKANO, but with more pollution.
