moving 5 people across Java; ideas?

We're planning for an upcoming 18 days in Java and Bali. This second visit will include 5 travelers, ages 72 to 15, and we could use some transport advice. Our flights are in and out of Jakarta, but we won't spend time there. We want make multiple stops in west and central Java, so that means a minivan/driver part of the time. We also want to visit Yogya/Borobudur and Surabaya, so about 12 days on Java, 6 on Bali.

I'm considering these transport options. Thoughts? Other ideas?

plan 1: Rent vehicle for 12 days from Jakarta to Surabaya and points in between. Then fly Surabaya-DPS, spend 6 days. Fly DPS-CGK.

plan 2: Rent vehicle in Jakarta, and use it as far as Yogya. Train to Surabaya, then fly the other legs.

plan 3: Rent vehicle for 5-6 days in west Java. Fly Bandung-Yogya or CGK-Yogya. Fly Yogya-Surabaya. Fly Surabaya-DPS. Fly DPS-CGK.

plan 4: Rent vehicle for entire 18 days and do no internal flights. This means overland Jakarta-Bali and return. Doesn't sound like a holiday!

Looks like a 7 or 9 passenger vehicle + driver would be US $250-$300/wk and if we hired the vehicle for a one-way journey we'd have to pay for the driver's return travel days. Seem right? Flights $40-$70 per person, depending on route? Trains maybe half the cost of flights.

Thanks in advance for your advice!!!

Plan 3 is the best, you will not spend too much time on the road. Overland drive in Java is very tiring and quite scary for westerners due to the way us Indonesians drive :) 18 days is also quite short, it's better to optimize your time visiting the attractions instead of moving from town to town by car.

Avoid land travel if you had not much time.

Land travel all over Indonesia is restricted to 30mph or 45kph and less due to heavily congested traffic, narrow road with bad condition road.

You had to pay for driver food and accommodation or all in built with the transportation fee.

a)Jakarta to Bundung by hire vehicle to see the scenery(request for a "Kia pregio" suitable for 10 pax.

Then fly the rest of the destination and rent vehicle at each destination for sight seeing.

Plan 4 is suicidal, never do that unless you're on a budget.

Plan 1 is doable.

But I would suggest the following:

Upon arrival in jakarta, take domestic flight to Yogyakarta.

Arrange car rental in Yogyakarta (with Yogyakarta-based rental company) to do tour of Central Java as well as to Bromo and drop you off at Surabaya). From Surabaya, fly to Bali.

It's a more relaxing option and you will only deal with 1 car rental company. In Bali, you can engaged with local car rental agency.

Consider the train or the aeroplane :)

In Yogyakarta maybe consider contacting a very charming guide by the name of Uki Wardoyo.

She is a mountaineering guide but appears to be quite versatile and works well with groups.

That might provide a different perspective to the region than you may otherwise experience.

Presumably she could arrange to meet you at the end of and airline or train trip and guide your onward into that region. It is an area rich in history and Javanese culture.

Presumably you are seeking to explore the Yogyakarta, Borobudur , Merapi, Bromo region.

Have a look at this previous TA discussion that mentions her tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g294228-i9251-k637… (see Post 2 and then 6 onward in regard to Miss Uki.

Her TA profile is here

Uki's TA profile at http://www.tripadvisor.com/members/ukiwardoyo describes her thus:

About me:

Indonesian Woman Mountain Guide especially in Central Java and East Java.

email: ukiwardoyo@gmail.com

portofolio: http://www.500px.com/ukiwardoyo

She doesn't mention there she is also a University graduate (Computer science) and a quite well known person on Javanese mountain slopes.

Thanks everyone, especially Cirque for the idea of starting the ground portion in Yogyakarta. One disadvantage of air travel is that pre-booking flights locks us in to certain dates and times. So it's appealing to just book flights near the beginning and end of the time and leave the middle more flexible.
