We're planning for an upcoming 18 days in Java and Bali. This second visit will include 5 travelers, ages 72 to 15, and we could use some transport advice. Our flights are in and out of Jakarta, but we won't spend time there. We want make multiple stops in west and central Java, so that means a minivan/driver part of the time. We also want to visit Yogya/Borobudur and Surabaya, so about 12 days on Java, 6 on Bali.
I'm considering these transport options. Thoughts? Other ideas?
plan 1: Rent vehicle for 12 days from Jakarta to Surabaya and points in between. Then fly Surabaya-DPS, spend 6 days. Fly DPS-CGK.
plan 2: Rent vehicle in Jakarta, and use it as far as Yogya. Train to Surabaya, then fly the other legs.
plan 3: Rent vehicle for 5-6 days in west Java. Fly Bandung-Yogya or CGK-Yogya. Fly Yogya-Surabaya. Fly Surabaya-DPS. Fly DPS-CGK.
plan 4: Rent vehicle for entire 18 days and do no internal flights. This means overland Jakarta-Bali and return. Doesn't sound like a holiday!
Looks like a 7 or 9 passenger vehicle + driver would be US $250-$300/wk and if we hired the vehicle for a one-way journey we'd have to pay for the driver's return travel days. Seem right? Flights $40-$70 per person, depending on route? Trains maybe half the cost of flights.
Thanks in advance for your advice!!!
