Malaria risk exists throughout the year in the whole country EXCEPT in: big cities and within the tourist resorts in Bali and Java.
In general, it is not necessary however, you may consult your local doctor or purchase some travel insurance.
Living and traveling on Java for many years, we never take malaria pills. We only take them for certain places outside Java, e.g. Aceh.
Actually the risk of dengue is greater than the risk of malaria, and there is no preventive medicine for dengue.
Your best policy is to prevent being bitten by mosquitoes, e.g. using DEET and long sleeves/trousers at times the mosquitoes get out.
As others have said, you don't need anti-malarial drugs on java.
What for? Malaria pills is unneeded for East Java Province. We're, people from East Java have resist by Malaria, trust us....... Wawan (Malang)
No need for malaria pills in East Java. As theo says Dengue is much more of a problem so use insect repellant with deet.
