Creature of comfort contemplating change? Advice please....

Hi to everyone on the Bali forum!

We are heading back to Bali again in September for 12 nights and March 2015 for 10 nights (accom sorted for that trip - canggu).

Now - we have always stayed in Seminyak/Kerobokan/Umalas area on previous trips. Love everything about the area - especially the food, food, food; but also the bars and spas! I love the fact that I know where to go and good places to eat but that there are always new fabulous options. Seminyak is a real holiday because we can just relax and feel at home straight away. I have been able to book for the last 7 nights in the villa I wanted to stay in in Seminyak - yay! But they are fully booked for the first 5 - boo!

Could this be a good opportunity to explore another side of Bali? And if so, I would really like your advice. I'm travelling with my husband and 10yo daughter so these are a few options I'm considering:

* Mother of the year award - by booking either Padma or Hard Rock and going kid-crazy! Benefit would be that we would not be stuck in the resort but is it really far enough from Seminyak to be considered a change?

* Family time in Sanur - no idea where to stay if this is the chosen destination so advice would be great. The idea of cycling up and down the beach sounds great!

* We like to do a day trip to Finns or the Rock Bar; so maybe stay at Rimba? I see it has a waterslide which my daughter would love but I am concerned that I would feel 'stuck' in the resort.

* Nusa Dua - again I'm concerned that we would get a bit 'stuck'.

* Ubud - again, not sure where to stay but would want to be fairly central to get out and explore. We have done a day trip there on a previous trip to Bali but I've never really had the urge to stay there though.

Thanks in advance. I've just spent 3 hours reading back the last 2 months on the forums and now I am SO excited to be going on holiday again!

Hi loveoz - I would say that fate has given you an opportunity to push beyond your comfort and familiarity with Seminyak and take that step to try somewhere different. For my money, Kuta isn't that far enough from Seminyak to bother with, they're both just opposite ends of the same urban sprawl. I would opt for giving Sanur a try; completely different feel to Seminyak. It has some nice restaurants there so you will eat well, but it's quieter, more chilled out so you can easily relax. There are a handful of bars, and you may get some live music in some restaurants. One word of warning, the Sindhu Beach market sellers are notoriously pushy, and you will soon wish for the scratchcard and viagra sellers of Seminyak. But forewarned is forearmed.

Go with an open mind, and don't try to compare it to Seminyak. If you don't like it, at least you've tried it in order to form your own opinion.

Agree with Noodles, give Sanur a try. You still have a nice beach, can do water sports, ride pushbikes, have plenty of restaurant choices and shopping. There are great hotels right on the beach with no roads to cross and being able to sit with your feet in the sand enjoying meals and drinks is very relaxing. How much do you want to spend per night? we can help suggest some places to stay.

Kuta is too close to Seminyak to give you and real feeling of change.

Hi loveozasia,

How wonderful to have two trips planned!

I too love the area of Seminyak you do & no trip would be right without it.

So we seem to be quite similar - Mum, Dad & 8 year old girl so I am always trying to get the balance right between keeping them happy but also fulfilling my hopes. We have stayed in 4 of the 5 areas you are considering so here is my take:

Nusa Dua - stayed at Grand Hyatt - they have great pools & a water slide which was so much fun for us all! Right on a beautiful beach with a path you can walk along. Bali Collections is across the way & has several eating options as well as shopping. We did 3 nights at the end of 2 weeks touring around & it was perfect just to chillout & enjoy what the hotel had to offer. I won't be interested in going at the start of my trip as I'd be itching to get out & about into my Bali.

Uluwatu - just got back from 3 nights at Balangan beach staying at La Joya. It was perfect for that final relax before the harsh reality of coming home & returning to work. It was very isolated & food options extremely limited unless you got a driver. NO shopping but close enough to Jimbaron for supplies if needed. I would return any day of the week to this but I think 5 days at the start of a holiday wouldn't be ideal. Again itching to get out & about.

Kuta - agree with Happy Noddle Boy - too close to Seminyak but with added crowds. I have contemplated doing the whole kiddies resort but in the end other peoples kids drive me mad so I've ruled that out.

Sanur - we have really enjoyed 3 trips to Sanur in the past. It's our place to feel totally relaxed whilst still having plenty of restaurants & a bit of shopping. We stayed at the Hyatt (twice) & the Griya Santrian. If we were to go back I would look at The Puri Santrian as have never stayed that south before. With 3 trips to Sanur down we don't think we will be back for a while unless we stayed there on route to Nusa Lembongan (just to throw another location option in there for you!)

Ubud - We have been twice - only once as a family. It has some amazing scenery & eateries & walks & shops & hotel & crowds. It's a very beautiful place & if you haven't stayed there this would be my pick. WE stayed at a hotel which was out of town so needed to rely on the shuttle which was 100% fine so don't be scared to not stay right in town just make sure there's a shuttle. Ubud is the kind of place I think you do need 5 days at least to really get into the groove. You can also do some really special short (or long) trips to see some ancient Balinese temples, rice paddies & silver/wood places. It really is nothing like Seminyak at all.

Finally I'd love to know where you are staying in Canggu. We recently stayed there for the first time & I am in love! Reminds me slightly of Ubud out in the local areas but by the ocean with sunsets & cocktails. Please let me know if you can?

Thanks, Mono

Thank you so much HappyNB, SnookyTT and Mono!

You've given me the kick I need. We are going to go to Sanur for a big change (how exciting but scary!). I've closed multiple web browsers and will focus on Sanur as trying to compare hotels & villas b/w 3 or 4 different areas was doing my head in!!

Snooky - our budget is $200/250 incl tax per night so any advice on hotels is much appreciated. Actually - any Sanur advice or must do's (or must eats, or must massages) is very appreciated!!

Mono - in Canggu we are staying in a massive place called Semara Pura. It's for my best friend's 40th and it is o-m-g to die for! I've never stayed there before but I don't think we'll be getting out and about too much on that trip!

Thanks so much for replying guys - have a great day!
