Terrorist threat

Hi,

We heard that police have killed or fired at terrorist in a bar in Kuta. Am wondering

if this is something to take seriously enough to cancel/ delay our trip.

This terrorist activity was related to a 'silent day' Hindu holiday. Have not bought flight tickets and in the beginning stages of organizing but April is approaching fast.

Has anyone heard of a travel alert to Bali/ Indonesia?

thanks

Hi,

The only news items re the shooting of terrorists on Bali that I can find on the internet date back a year ago.

Since the notorious 2002 Bali bombing the Indonesian police hunts down any terrorist or would-be terrorist.

Do you travel to the USA? Chances of being caught up in a shootout with the police or a madman in the USA are much higher than chances of being caught up in one in Indonesia.

First I have heard about this.

There was a report (today) of some thieves being shot following a gold robbery Jakarta.

Indonesia is a nation of around 250 million people. There is crime, but it is not a feature of daily life.

Many criminal activities are 'tagged' to terrorism, some crime is the work of crazy people, some is related to corruption, avarice and graft. In 250 million people there is plenty of opportunity for the full range of human misadventure and misbehavior. How it is attributed is the work of social politics.

Attribution of domestic criminal activity or intent is driven to some degree by the popularisation of the term "Terrorist" and Terrorism" in the western media, and the constant propaganda onslaught associated with the so-called Global War on Terror that has been omnipresent for some years now.

Most of the engrained domestic terrorism influences in Indonesia date back to the efforts by western governments (principally the US) to destabilise the Republic of Indonesia in the post-WW2 period and whilst under the Presidential leadership of Sukarno.

Groups that assisted in de-stabilising Sukarno's central government were funded, and supported by clandestine means, including the radicalisation of secessionist and separatist movements, and religious groups who were opposed to the concept of the new democratic Republic of Indonesia that emerged in the post-WW2 environment.

When domestic criminals are apprehended and tagged terrorists it helps promote the concept that the potential for emergent contemporary domestic terrorism is being controlled and expunged.

It provides reassurance that the problem is being dealt with, yet also provides potential alarm as by default it also suggests a potential for omnipresent danger, and hence an ongoing need for the monitoring of society for such activities.

The groups associated with Indonesian domestic terrorism in the emergent era of the Rebublic of Indonesia came into further prominence again in the 80s when they gained renewed strength following clandestine support and funding by the US. They drew upon their numbers and then covertly trained them in Afghanistan as anti-Soviet Mujahideen fighters. They later returned to Indonesia, by now further radicalised, and also trained in combat and insurrection. Subsequently they became restless and agitated, some turned to criminal activities, some took on activities associated with insurrection, whilst others just re-adapted to life at home.

Indonesia is a normally a quiet backwater compared to the omnipresent machinations of the US both in the international and domestic theatre of 'Terrorism".

I humbly suggest that if you want to get away from this for a while then Indonesia might provide a reasonable refuge from it.

Pick some accommodation that does not provide a satellite feed of Foxnews and CNN if you want some rest from it.

Fortunately violent crime, the use of firearms and similar behaviour is not normative in Indonesia.

Come to Bali and have a rest from it for a few weeks. The most intimidating behaviour you are likely to encounter on your trip is the attentions of the TSA when you are trying to escape the US.

When you return home afterwards it will likely become clearer what is going on.
