Hi,

How difficult is it to see a wild tiger in Indonesia? do tourists often see tigers in safaris (Sumatra's parks)? and what does it take?

Thanks

Hi,

It is very difficult to see a tiger in the wild - they are scared of humans.

One place where you may be able to see one is in the Kerinci National Park near the entrance at Maura Sako.

I was there in Jan 2005 and stayed overnight in the village and my Indonesian friends spoke with the locals and found out you can sometimes see them if you walking on the Tapan road.

But I would think you would need to live in the village for a few weeks to be lucky enough to see one.

Please be aware that anyone promoting Tiger Tours is probably a fraud.

Read the following shockingly disturbing experience from a recent traveller to Sumatra.

Best place will be a zoo, but the conditions of such places can leave a bad feeling with one.

Hi Again,

I will attempt to post the following link from a closed blog on Kerinci National Park.

It is a story about seeing a tiger in the area I mentioned above.

Hi TS1983,

Yes, please do not get yourself into a situation like those other travellers found themselves in.

I knew of their original post, but until this morning had not seen their full story - such a terrible story.

Did you get to see the link above re tapan - it does work you have to leave it for a minute to reload.

Such a great story and you know when I walked up that raod with my friends I felt really frightened I would meet one. But I did not so was able to relax.

That young man taking his vines to market in my photos sort of risked his life everytime he walked in that area.

Pamela.

Hi Again,

Check out this post from Thorn Tree forum

http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/thread.jspa?threadID=2107421

Scroll down to end where the poster mentions 3 local conservationists and contact details.

They are located near the Way Kabas National Park in south east Sumatra.

Hi Pamela,

I checked all the links you put, very useful. I am keen to see tigers in wild but dont want to be disappointed, and being on time budget makes it impossible. perhaps I will take this opportunity in India.

Thanks again for all the information, you saved me precious money and time.
