Best places to sit and watch the world go by

When I vacation I like to study the locals. A cheap form of entertainment is to sit somewhere with a drink and watch as people go about their daily business.

Stauton Bar at SOHO is great in the evenings for people watching. You'll see all sorts of people (locals, tourists, professionals, families, etc.) walking up and down the mid-level escalators.

The Classifieds on Hollywood Road is great as well.

I think you should visit ancient towns. In the most famous ancient towns, you can choose to sit in the open air bars or teahouses. You can enjoy the beautiful scenery and local people's daily life. Zhongshan ancient town in Chengdu, Yangshuo in Guilin, Pingyao in Shanxi, Lijiang in Yunnan are all such places.

Hello Grace F,

Good suggestions but the OP is asking about specific locations in Hong Kong to do a bit of people-watching. ;-)

This is becoming one of my favorite lists of places to visit. I was fond of the McCafe thread too.

I wouldn't recommend anywhere in TST if you want to see locals - you can venture into some cafes in Mongkok, I like to visit coffee joints at Yuenlong and Sharon, true HK flavour.

But it might be a little too far for you.

Some might not agree, but I think visiting local cafes such as Queens at Festival Walk is a good idea also.

I second Luis_HK's mention of Yuen Long.

McCafe Yuen Long:

They have 2/F and 3/F too. From above, you can look down to the street level, and see many locals doing their day to day affairs. Over 99% locals. It is not far from Fan Ling. One bus ride.

With Yuen Long not being too far away I see myself visiting for sure.

That photo also looks like it is less busy than most pics of HK I see where streets are really crowded with people.

You can see the pavement!

It must be early morning or something. The "Yuen Long Main Road" (what locals call Castle Peak Road through the heart of Yuen Long) is usually just as crowded as Nathan Road in Mongkok.
