Are Chinese RMB available at ATMs in Hong Kong?

We will be in Hong Kong for one week prior to leaving for three weeks in mainland China.

We will order Hong Kong dollars from our bank here at home, so we have just a few to pay a taxi to hotel from airport, etc. We will then use a debit card to get cash as needed from ATMS.

Due to the high service fees and lousy exchange are, I prefer order only HK$, and not Chinese RMB currency prior to leaving home.

Is it easy to get Chinese RMB in Hong Kong? Are there ATMs that offer a choice of currencies? Last year in Istanbul we used several ATMs that gave us a choice of Turkish Lira, Euros, British Pounds or US dollars. Is this common in Hong Kong?

Thanks!

You may use HKD to change for RMB in any banks in Hong Kong. Certain ATMs of Hong Kong Bank (HSBC) do provide RMB and HKD.

One reminder: do not change for RMB at those street-side kiosks although the rate might looks good. It's really hard to tell a fake RMB note from a genuine one so it's safer to get them from a reputable and decent bank.

Thanks dinomandy!

I think it was the HSBC ATMs in Istanbul that had multiple currency options--so it's good to know they do in Hong Kong also.

You may draw RMB from the ATMs at these locations:

Not only HSBC, but also most other banks in Hong Kong, have RMB available from their ATMs.

Unless your own bank abroad is linked with HSBC, you might find that banks here linked with the Jetco network (everything except HSBC and Hang Seng) are cheaper to use.

Bank of China ATMs do too - at least at the Shun Tak Building (Macau Ferry terminal).

You should be able to withdraw RMB from many ATMs, at least I think you can try at the IFC mall

Some of the ATM's I used in Hong Kong had the option of HKD or RMB. There are plenty of banks & ATM's so if one doesn't it wont be far until you come across another ATM to try.

Also if you make purchases by credit card it usually gives you the option of paying in HKD or your home currency.
