New Central Waterfront Promenade Opened

After many years of harbour reclamation and construction work, the new Central Waterfront Promenade on HK Island opened (unofficially) a few days ago. It hasn't received much publicity as there is still a lot of landscaping and other work to do but it is now possible to walk between Star Ferry Pier and Admiralty Station Exit A on Harcourt Road, in a completely traffic-free environment via the waterfront and through Tamar Park in about 15 minutes. The new promenade also opens up new photo opportunities of the HK Island skyline. The Observation Wheel, similar to the London Eye, is planned to be installed next year near Central Piers 9 & 10. The promenade should also make a good viewing point for harbour fireworks displays.

At last, it seems much-needed new life is being breathed into the HK Island harbourfront!;

I think the so called Observation Wheel is going to be an eye sore. It'll ruin the look of the Island.

Good to know...can you walk along this new promenade from the Grand Hyatt to the Star ferry landing?

The new promenade doesn't yet extend as far as Grand Hyatt and HK Convention & Exhibition Centre, but from Grand Hyatt you can easily reach it by walking west along Harbour Road and Lung Wui Road, which leads to the new Central Government Offices and LEGCO Building,from where you can follow the path through Tamar Park down to the promenade.

Pretty cool. Wonder if they will keep it a "secret" before the NYE countdown.

That's good to know. On our last two visits, the building work has looked like it was going to be never-ending! Will check out the new promenade when we're back there in February. Do you know if the wheel will be up by then? (Chinese New Year?)

I don't think the wheel will be in place by February as the deadline for tenders isn't until the end of December. There is still landscaping to be done and a lot of amenities to be completed for the new promenade such as public toilets, and construction work will still be going on in the vicinity for some time for the Central - Wan Chai Bypass and Shatin - Central rail link but after so many years work you can at last see some improvement in the area.

Thanks Solent Traveller! That's a shame that we won't get to ride the wheel this time, but I suppose it's a good excuse for planning our next visit ;o)

Weather was pants yesterday so we opted to stick around the Central and Admiralty area malls checking out the Winterfest Xmas displays instead of having a look at the new promenade. Will await a nicer day to visit before reporting back.
