How far, do you mean journey time or journey distance?

Suzhou doesn't have a train station of its own. If you can afford 2N1D, you could utilise the overnight trains and visit Suzhou from Beijing.

The best trains would be the Z trains. Hard sleeper would be 290/300/309 RMB for upper/middle/lower bunk and soft sleeper would be 452/472 RMB for upper/lower bunk.

Beijing -- Suzhou: Z85 (1928--0648) 11h20min

Suzhou -- Beijing: Z86 (2000--0719) 11h19min

Once you get to Suzhou, head straight for Hanshan Temple. Finish sightseeing and leave before 0900, which's when most tour groups start taking over the place.

Next sights would be Suzhou Silk Museum and then Lion Grove Garden. My personal opinion of Humble Administrator's Garden is that it's over-hyped and over-priced, you're not really missing out if you don't visit it.

After you finish these 2 sights it should be time for lunch, and sightseeing at Guanqian Jie -- the pedestrian street of Suzhou.

Next stop is Coiled Gate, one of the land and water gates of Suzhou's old city wall, then Master-of-Nets Garden. This is the smallest garden but also one of the best.

That should be all for the day, head back to the train station to catch the overnight train back to Beijing.

Argh, sorry, I meant that Suzhou doesn't have an airport of its own, it obviously does have its own train station.

In addition, there're some pretty major ongoing reconstruction works at Suzhou train station, so be prepared for that.
