Transfers from Beijing airport to hotels.

Can anyone suggest the cheapest but hastle-free way to get from Beijing airport to a downtown hotel? Are taxi's the best way to go? How much should a taxi cost?

Taxi. Cost varies from about 60 yuan to 100 depending on the hotel and traffic.

Do not however make a deal with someone INSIDE the airport. Go to the taxi queue and wait for a real taxi. The others who approach you in the airport will make any deal you say and upon arrival at your hotel, try to charge you more. Ever been in an argument in Chinese, when you don't know Chinese, and people gather around on the street to join in, everyone shouting?

We were even warned about this, but the person showed us a "license" to prove he was a legitimate taxi driver. He wasn't!

It was the only mar on our beautiful trip.

Taxies are good and inexpensive, but the taxi driver most likely won't speak or read English. So, before you go to China, find a website that has the name and address of the hotel you are staying at in Chinese characters. The website of the hotel may have them. Print them out so you can hand them to the taxi driver before you get into the cab. Make sure he knows where you are going before you get in.

This is a good thing to do any time you travel in China. Have the hotel write down the characters for were ever you want to go and give this to the taxi drivers. Be sure to get a hotel card before you leave the hotel and the taxi drivers will be able to get you back. These are even good to have if you are just walking around. We got lost one day and showed our card to a shopkeeper and they were able to point out the way to go.
