How much is an acceptable/moderate tip for hotel staff?

Are we expected to give tips to taxi drivers?

How about in reataurants?

This has been asked and answered at least twice since yesterday.

You do NOT need to tip, in any of these situations!

Tipping is discouraged by authorities and is not required in China.--even at upscale restaurant and hotels. It's also not expected that you tip taxi drivers. However,if you have recieved exceptional service, you may consider offering something extra.

hotel staff:USD2-3

Taxi driver:USD1-3

No need to tip.

The amounts listed above would exceed the actual bill in some cases!

I've tipped taxi drivers in exceptional circumstances, like where they got lost and charged much less than the metered amount, or were waiting a long time for me without a meter running, or helped haul 5 enormous suitcases down a few flights of stairs.

In more expensive restaurants, a service charge may be included in the bill.

I suspect that bellhops in the fancy hotels have gotten used to receiving tips, along with tour bus drivers and tour guides.

5. Re: Tip

Do not tip.

Anyone telling you otherwise is simply hoping that you come in contact with them! Its hard to wrap your mind around, but just assume its been tacked into the bill.
