Pingyao versus Wuyuan villages

We are having difficulties deciding if Pingyao and the Wuyuan villages are nothing more than a tourist trap in mid/late October. Any thoughts on whether they are worth seeing? We ideally wanted to see ancient towns from an artitecture pespective but also are still lived in with local village/town life. Are both Pingyao and the Wuyuan villages overrun with tourists?

Thanks for any insight.

As you stated that ‘we ideally wanted to see ancient towns from an architecture perspective but also are still lived in with local village/town life’. Pingyao is an ancient town so it should fulfill your request.

I’ll suggest Pingyao because;

The city/county has one of the four ancient Walls in China. The others are Beijing, Xian and Jingzhou.

Pingyao was the financial center at China in the 18th Century. Personally I’m no interest on that. But the County Office is worth to visit especially the ancient prison.

In addition, Pingyao’s Museum (Wen Miao) keeps the only Zhuangyuan (the 1st Champion) examination paper.

And the rest, you shall search in the web.

Hard to us to tell it it is worth it for you but for me Pingyao was worth it.

Google images of both places and make your decision.

They are both worth it, but as they are geographically distant from each other, inclusion depends on the rest of your itinerary and how much time you have.

As for tourists, mid-late October shouldn't be too bad. Pingyao old town tends to be busier between 09:00-16:00 but mostly on a few central streets. Outside of those times when the day trippers go back to new Pingyao or Taiyuan city, it can be magical and even during the day, there are plenty of old town streets that see very few tourists. Wuyuan is more a collection of villages in relatively close proximity and a couple of them tend to be more well-known and popular than others which see few tourists. As Wuyuan takes a bit more effort to get in and out of, by last half of October I doubt if the area will be overrun. The Yixian villages which are closer to Huangshan and which are a few hours' drive from Wuyuan and more accessible, get much more traffic.
