Ferry tragedy - just when things seemed to be getting better

"Eleven people died after a lorry lost control and rammed a ferry at the Likoni Channel in Mombasa.

At least 20 others were injured and many are feared trapped in the early morning incident.

Emergency services including the Kenya Red Cross are at the scene as rescue efforts continue.

The KRC fears the death toll could rise." - Daily Nation

Sympathy and condolences to all the families affected

A terrible tragedy, May they R.I.P. Its a disgrace the way a blind eye is turned to vehicles that should not even be on the roads, this wagon looks in good condition compared to ones we encounter daily between Kilifi and Mtwapa, 80% of the HGV & PSV vehicles should not be on the roads never mind the matatus and their mad drivers & conductors, until people start respecting human life tragedies of this nature will continue to happen in Kenya. Wouldn't it be great if some of these aspiring politicians would take on board these problems and start introducing checks that "kito kidogo" could not sort out on the roadsides !!

pjduk, there is an equivalent to MOT for all commercial vehicles here... But TKK (toa kitu kidogo - give me something small) seems to often sort out some issues.

Having said that, the Mercedes truck on the pictures look to be in good shape, at least outside. We hope to know WHAT actually happened.

Very very sad news. I have only experienced the ferry once but it is not a nice experience and vastly overloaded apart from anything else

It is being reported that the truck's brakes failed at the top of the steep loading ramp

Contrary to what they were reporting yesterday the Nation is now reporting that 4 people were killed and the Standard that 'at least five' were killed.

Will the lorry driver be arrested for manslaughter ?

Brakes don't just fail, it should be attributed to poor vehicle maintenance.

Of course being Kenya nothing will happen and the same sort of 'incident' will happen again.
