Mara entry fee payment by smart card ended

From Mara Triangle's Facebook page

"The Narok County Government wishes to notify the industry that the contract entered into by the former Narok County Council and Equity Bank Ltd terminated on 24th June 2013.

Effective 25th June 2013, the Narok County Government will take responsibility for entry tickets into the Maasai Mara National Reserve.

The following interim measures are in place for obtaining entry tickets, issued by our staff positioned at the following locations:-

1. KATO Headquarters - Upper Hill, Nairobi

2. Narok County Headquarters (former NCC offices) - Mau Narok Rd, Narok Town

Payment by KATO members will be strictly by cheque payable to ‘Narok County Government’

Entry without valid tickets will not be permitted and we seek the cooperation of the industry in this regard. Spot checks and surveillance will be enhanced during this period and sanctions imposed on companies and drivers without valid tickets.

Any smart cards purchased after Monday 24th June 2013 will be invalid.

All queries in the meantime to be directed to KATO Secretariat for ease of information flow to all KATO members.

The issuance of the smart cards was at times a nightmare, especially if you have many clients going to Masai mara, each one of them has to be issued with an individual card with a group of more than 20 you will be in the bank for not less than 3 hours. It was a good idea which Equity bank have messed up themselves giving the county governor a chance to get rid of them.

We will see what happens next

The circus continues, equity bank has gone to court to challenge the decision by Narok county government , hope it does not affect the coming tourist season.

Any ideas if our cards will be valid...?

The cards we have don't have a issue date, just an expiry date

On the back it says "this is a pre-paid card and is for use by the cardholder [T&Cs blurb]" "Use your card to pay for goods and services at outlets displaying the Equity Bank sign" "This card is issued by Equity Bank Ltd for the County Council of Narok"

We were given these last year after our safari in October, not sure what "pre-paid balance" they have on them though as we never got to use them afterwards and was wondering if they would still be valid now
