Hiking in and around Nairobi with kids (PLUS SAFE)

I have been trying to do some research to find a safe and relatively easy place that is on the South side of Nairobi. We will like to break a Mara to Amboseli drive and are looking for a an relatively easy place to hike with 2 little kids. This place could be anywhere on way to Amboseli from Mara.

I see some reference to Ngong Hills and Karura Forest but our biggest concern will be SAFETY and EASY TRAILS. Not that worried about park enterance price per se....

It's perfectly safe to go to Karura forest. If you take the entrance from Belgian Embasyy, it's an easy 1 hour walk to the waterfalls & caves. On Sundays, you'll find heaps of visitors either strolling, jogging & taking picnics.

Late to this thread, but Larissa, your info on the Karura Forest is very out of date (and you're not often wrong! ;-)). As Stef says, Karura is properly managed, full of trails and attractions and very much an asset for those in the the Muthaiga/Runda/Village Market area. It was taken on as a bit of a cause by the wife of the former British Ambassador and comprehensively "rescued" several years ago. You can read all about it here: http://www.friendsofkarura.org/

It's one of the gems of green Nairobi in my view.

Happy hiking,

Richard Trillo
