Self-catering apartment in Nairobi

I am looking to rent a self-catering apartment (studio or one bed) in June for about two weeks. Ideally I prefer to stay in Yaya, Hurlingham or Westlands. My budget is very modest. Would welcome any recommendation. Thank you.

Have a look at The Ndemi Place. I think they do self-catering. Most of the TA reviews are good.

Thanks Asifiwe but Ndemi Place is fully booked until mid August. Do you have other suggestions? My difficulty is due to my modest budget i.e. about Kshs60,000 per month.

My problem is that I live rather a long way from Nairobi!! I was hoping someone else might have some ideas for you.

Can you ask Ndemi Place if they can recommend anywhere else?

Have you thought about YHA or YMCA? Some of our visitors have used them.

Hello there ..... you'll be had pressed to find anything that goes for the rate you looking for - Sh 60,000/$800 per month simply because of the areas you desire. Just like any big city worldwide Eg in London, certain neigbourhoods command high rent regardless of the apartment/room size. The same goes for Nairobi.

That said, check out Kiloran House Cottage. It is located Kilimani near Yaya Center. They also have some pretty good reviews. Check them out on facebook.

Yrneighbour is right - self-catering places are not necessarily a cheap(er) option. There are any number of fancy places catering to the UN/diplomatic/consultant community, but these are in the range of US1,000 per month at least.

The Kenya Continental (also a Casino) on Rhapta Rd in Westlands (NOT the Intercontinental) has clean motel style rooms for 3,000 (older style) or 3,500 per night (incl. breakfast in the dining room), and a nyama choma (BBQ meat) garden next door where you can get great food cheaply, with music on the weekends. It's also 15 mins walk from the Sarit Centre, shops supermarkets etc. Glory Suites further up the same road has a range of studio apartments, I checked them out but can't remember the prices now. Volkers has lots of serviced self-contained apartments for 75,000 per month - off Rhapta Rd near the UNHCR processing centre.

The Methodist Guesthouse in Kileleshwa (Oloitoktok Rd) is large, clean, with a dining room, swimming pool and cafe outside, but not self-catering or that cheap either, altho a short stay would be okay. Breakfast is included, and you can sneak things like boiled eggs, toast, sausages into your bag for lunch later on!

You could also just start reading the Nation classifieds every day – lots of places advertised in the paper, though be sure it has good security:
