3 days in Nairobi

Because of our flight schedule, we have three days in Nairobi before setting off on a 15 day safari. We have heard it's not safe after dark. Any ideas what day trips and attractions we can do instead of sitting around in the Panafric Hotel?

You can have excursions around Nairobi for the three days you will be in the city.

You could visit the following places with this proposed itinerary.

Day 1.

The Giraffe center, David sheldrick animal orphanage, the Karen blixen museum and the Bomas of Kenya for cultural dances. This could be crowned with Dinner at the carnivore restaurant.

Day 2.

Visits to the National Museums of Kenya and the adjacent snake park and a city tour of Nairobi city.

tour with lunch at a place of choice and you can sample dinner at the safari park hotel.

Day 3.

This day could be spent within the confines of your hotel or you could also opt for one of the following:

visit to the Ngong hills,

Visit to the Thika coffee farm and learn more about coffee produstion.

I would advice you have dinner at your hotel and go to bed early as you prepare for the upcoming safari.

the two other posters have some great ideas, of which I've taken in myself.

As far as the city not being safe after dark--yes, you are right in many respects. If you are being escorted around after dark by a reliable cabbie/guide, then you will be fine, but don't recommend going out and about after dark by yourself.

If you are looking for a good cabbie/city guide, a friend of mine (a native Kenyan) has his own car service business. let me know if you are interested, and I can forward you his contact info.

There is another interesting place to visit it's called Kitengela Glass Factory. (That's where I want to go the next time I'm in Nairobi ;o) )

It is located opposite the Nairobi National Park, at the end of a rough road.

They make beautiful glassware and artwork out of recycled glass etc.

And if you want to do some shopping go to the Village Market, you can take a taxi. It's a very special place to be in Nairobi. Every Friday you will find the famous "Masai Market" on the parking site of this shopping mall.

Enjoy this great city!
