Update on Status of Operations at Nairobi Airport 16 Aug 13

1. Visit by ICAO – ESAF Officials:

The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Eastern & South African Office (ESAF) visited the Emergency Operations Center on 15th August 2013. After reviewing operations at the Airport, they expressed satisfaction with the performance of both the operator (KAA) and the regulator (KCAA).

2. Various Operations:

i. Safety:

a. The footprint of pedestrians on the apron has increased tenfold and efforts will be made to assist passengers handling.

b. The ramp at the pavilion back exit has a very high gradient and porters are at hand to assist those with heavy trolleys and wheelchair passengers. KAA has began construction of a second ramp with a fairer gradient has began.

ii. Security:

a. The ring road around the arrivals terminal should be opened for motor vehicle access to Units 2 and 3.

iii. Passenger Facilitation

a. Arriving international passengers have a holding tent near the crew gate, and once their baggage arrives at the carousel, they pick it up and exit

through Unit 3 Arrivals.

b. Restoration of the upstairs section of Unit 2 (Gates 4 and 5) is ongoing with the area is set to be opened for use later next week.

c. KAA has Portable Public Address (PA) Systems for use at all passenger interfaces.

d. Flight Information Display Systems (FIDS) are now working.

e. Syokimau car park has no tent for meters & greeters. KAA is to provide a tent now that the rains have started.

iv. Signage, Image and Branding:

a. Signage is now about 96% done. Old signage that is not in congruence with the current activities is now being removed / covered.

b. Various walls in the temporary relocations may need some artistic murals to reduce the white monotony from the tents. KAA and KTB have already begun the process of beautification.

v. Business Continuity Levels:

a. All airlines (both domestic and international) have resumed operations with some of them working inside temporary accommodation (tents).

b. International operations are at 100% in terms of network but 90% in terms of volumes.

c. Domestic operations are back to normal.

vi. Overall Status of Operations:

. Unit 1 Upstairs Gates 11-14 is awaiting release before cleaning and major repairs.

. Unit 1 downstairs is awaiting release before cleaning and minor repairs.

. Unit 2 downstairs had some smoke but was cleaned and opened on the following day 8th August 2013.

. Unit 2 Upstairs Gates 4-5 Cleaning is in progress.

. Unit 2 Upstairs Gates 6-10 is awaiting release before cleaning and medium repairs.

. Unit 3 was not damaged by fire and was opened on the same day 7th August 2013.

. State Pavilion was availed by H.E. The President on 8th August 2013

Thanks. One question I've seen here is about money change facilities. Are any Banks operating? ATMs?

YES, there are ATMs and Forex offices available at the airport. If you can't find immediately, just ask and you'll be directed.
