Having just returned from a nile cruise I would advise any one to be strong with the hawkwers and some shop owners. This was our experience...
We found out that since the revolution most of the tourist police have been removed from the sites. This, and the drop in tourists (only 25 percent now visiting to what it used to be) has made the market traders and some shop owners push harder to make a sale. Most of the tourists in our group would not walk freely in Luxor because of this, and we were pressured to buy at all the sites by small market stall holders or hawkers. This did make us feel uncomfortable and stopped us from browsing in any market stalls during our trip..
We enjoyed our holiday on the Nile, but if you are strong with the sellers you will be ok. We did not regret going, but my comments are to let you be prepared for this.
