nile cruises

I understand from reading posts here that not all 5* nile cruises are the same so the question is how do I know the real quality of a cruise before I book my tour? There are many cruises I can't find any reviews about them and some have good reviews but very old back to 2008!

You're in a rather awkward situation there, Redhorizon! Visitors from the Americas seem to prefer booking their whole 'tour' through one agent, so you either have to have a great deal of trust in that agent, or find another way whereby you can satisfy yourself that all will be well. In the UK there are quite a number of reputable companies which specialise in Egypt, and being British, most of the DE's on this forum can vouch for and recommend them. However, when it comes to the States we don't know them, and are therefore unable to give a personal recommendation.

I think the best advice you'll get from the majority on here, that's if you're not too sure of your US agent, would be to pre-book your flights and a hotel here in Egypt for a few days, and then contact one of the well known Egyptian companies, after all, whichever foreign agent you used would hand your booking over to one of these Egyptian agents anyway; so what have you got to lose?

At least that way you would be able to view the boats before you actually parted with your cash. All the cruise itineraries are almost identical.

Loads of boats aren't sailing due to the low tourist numbers, and passengers are being transferred to alternatives to the one that they originally thought they would be on, so it would be difficult to guarantee exactly which boat you would get otherwise.

Try emailing one or two Egyptian companies, and see what response you get.

Good luck,

I returned from a Nile cruise on Monday 11th February 2013. I was booked on the Emely ( it is actually derelict but they "forgot" to tell me!). You Travel transfered us to the the MS Esadora when we ere actually there saying it was 5 star delux. It was NOT. 3 star at best. very disappointing. run down, tired decor, ripped carpets doors dont shut, leaks, poor quality food. I could go on. The only good thing was the staff. They were great. kind, helpful and hard working. We did see good boats. They do exist. Just You Travel dont put their customers on them!

Just returned form what should of been the Emily, that boat has been decommisioned for over two years it's a blag to get you over there then dump you on any boat they see fit. The food was herendouse and uneatable i spent my whole time HUNGRY and even ended up in tear's i was that hungry and frustrating. My boyfirend and i had to spend another £100 for something decent to eat at the Nile hotel. I've took picturs of what they were offering us as i am making a formal complaint, i wouldn't feed my dogs what they were putting on, you even had to aske for cheese or fresh fruit. There excuse for this ppor food was they wouldn't put out anything decent as the Egyptians would take it all therefore we English had to do without, it was the worst experience of my life NEVER AGAIN! Be careful as i believe we were all shafted.

We were supposed to be on the ms emily but as annette s has said ended up on another boat. we flew out from gatwick 4th feb 2013 & ended up on the Esedora 2 - the emily is now a scrap of junk tied up to the dock at Luxor - we actually saw the emily on our bus back from the karnak temple one day. the Esedora 2 was ok once you got used to it, but could do with a lot of improvement: food poor, very noisy egyption children running through the corridors & upper deck - reception staff very miserable (cabin boys excellent though) etc. Quite a few people amongst our group (35 people all on the same package) went down with stomach complaints over the course of the week - the general opinion was from food washed in the local water - salad etc.

Overall my party are not complaining too much because after the weeks cruise our holiday included free transfer from luxor to the excellent Titanic Beach hotel, Hurgarda for 5 nights - total cost for 12 nights £429.

overall good value, but you get what you pay for - we knew from this site that we would not end up on the emily & there would be as many cons as pro's.

Anyone seeking a luxary nile cruise & stay holiday will probably have to pay £750 +

I need 3 night and 4 days cruise on a nice boat. can anyone recommend it to me? a nice and small boat is my dream.

I am about to give up a Nile cruise after reading all trip reports here.

I am thinking already to go to Luxor and Aswan on my own, get excursions, get hotel and eat authentic food. I believe it will be cheaper and more authentic experience.

What do you think?

We just returned from Egypt and sailed 3 nights on the Sonesta St. George cruise boat. The boat was outstanding in all aspects: food, service, facilities. It was a real highlight of our time in Egypt. Our cabin was large and lovely with a sliding glass door that provided a great view and lots of fresh air.The boat was pretty empty on our trip, so that made it feel like we had our own gigantic yacht. If you have the chance, definitely select this boat for your cruise!! We booked through Lady Egypt and they did an outstanding job. I posted a trip summary in the Egypt forum.
