Hi there are no compulsory ones but recommended are Polio, Dipheria, Hep A, Tetanus and Typhoid. I personally make sure mine are all up to date. Once you have the Hep A if you go back for a booster within the next 12 months you are covered for 20 yrs.
The GP should not charge you for these.
An anti-bac hand cream is a good defence against some viral infections.
In most cases jabs are not required if you are in the tourist areas ie Luxor, Aswan and Cairo etc.
ic you wish, you can get advice from the FCO office
Don't worry to much, just take care when eating food and avoid touching animals. Please be aware the Egyptian money if very dirty (anti-bac)
They are recommended. If you don't get them do be aware a) the diseases they prevent are serious and potentially fatal and b) if you should get these diseases, your travel insurance will not pay out for any costs of treatment, repatriation or loss of income.
Merth,
I think that the nail has been hit on the head here. The jabs are not compulsory - they are recommended. I have just had mine (Typhoid, tetanus, diptheria, Hep A and Polio) in preparation for our holiday in June. The travel nurse who gave them said that, if we chose not to have them and contracted one (or more) of the diseases, then our insurance may not pay out for any treatment and/or repatriation as we could be considered negligent in not taking every preventative precaution. Given that they last a long time and are, in the UK at least, free - it would be unwise in the extreme not to have them.
Cheers,
Jet
Hi,
With the amount of people & staff constantly around, I wouldn't ever entertain going abroad to even Med countries without having typhoid & Hep A! One poster on here contracted typhoid in Spain, we can remember typhoid scares in Greece & Italy. For the sake of a quick jab (& I have to lie down for blood tests as well as stick my head between my knees after!) I'd say have them done. You can't count on the hygiene or health of people with whom you're mixing & some of the recommended jabs cover diseases spread thru touching surfaces where one may have touched (unwittingly) fecal matter, if someone hasn't washed their hands.
We always travel with antibac, even in Europe.
Regards
Well at the end of the day it’s the traveller’s choice, we all have a comfort zone and we have to do what’s best for us as an individual.
Thank you for your answers i have come to a conclusion i will go for the jabs.
Thankyou everyone

I've been 5 times and never had any shots.
I've only ever had a slight tummy upset once, and immodium soon knocked that on the head.
Totally agree ETW, but at least on here, one can make an informed choice.
I have no desire to play Russian Roulette with my health, nor do the members of my family & for the poster(s) who don't have shots & tell everyone that they're ok, so you will be, just cos someone goes 9,999,999,999 times without shots, never has had a tummy upset, doesn't mean that the next person will be so lucky! That arguement really doesn't hold water & I would never allow someone to take responsibility for my health.
Regards
I have a feeling if you are travelling from a country where yellow fever is endemic, a shot for that is compulsory.
Would suggest you take plenty of Immodium, and some antibacterial hand gel with you if you weren't already planning to.
