Trading Hours - Foreign Exchange Bank At Cairo Airport???

Our Question Is:

We arrive in Cairo at 6.36A.M. on a week day. Will the foreign exchange bank be open [that is, the one next to the counter where you buy your visas}?

We realize there are ATM facilities in the airport to obtain Egyptian Currency, in larger denominations, but we would like to be able to exchange a part of this for some, - Two, five, ten LE notes etc before leaving the airport.

We will be carrying the correct amount in [ Brittish Pounds] to purchase our visas on arrival, plus a few extra pounds, in case the price increases between now and May 07.

We are a New-Zealand couple, traveling to Egypt independently. During our time in Cairo, we are staying in a private home on the city fringe. We understand it is situated quite near the new "Marriott Hotel" in a suburb called "Mirage City"? Looking at map of Cairo this place seems to be quite isolated, and along way from the main tourist attractions, and perhaps proximity to a bank or ATM machine etc, hence our need to have Egyptian currency in small ,as well as large denominations prior to leaving the airport ,for a taxi, and pay for the hire of guide, car and driver for sightseeing early the following day .

Hopefully someone can advise if the airport bank is open 6.30AM when there are international flight arrivals. It is a Singapore Airlines flight, I think they use Terminal 2, {the newer one}. Many Thanks

It is open 24 hours a day. Don't worry and ATMs are available and they work. When you chcange money in a new country (anywhere in the world) for the first time, check the rates and the receipt carefully and make sure you got the right amounnts.

The bank should have some small notes. If not, try and change from any other airport facility. If you still cannot do that, make sure you agree with the taxi driver about the price you will pay and tell the driver to make sure he has the change if he is interested in the ride. If the driver tries to play any trick or plays the idiot role, you can just ask him to wait when you arrive at the hotel, go to the reception, get the right change and go back and pay him.

It shouldn’t be that sophisticated, but I am just putting worst case scenarios.

Miraj City is a new housing development adjoined to the Marriot hotel. You can walk to the hotel where there should be all the main services you need. It is a very beautiful and green place outside the pollution and hassle of the city (I live close to it), but it is far away from almost everything. Nothing comes for free you know.

Many thanks Darsh for your prompt and detailed reply. Yes I am sure we will enjoy staying with friends in the Miraj City area. Our hosts are an ex-pat American and his Egyptian wife. We will gain a better insight to every-day life in Cairo and be shown places may be other tourists would not get to see. this far outweighs the small inconvenience of having to spend extra time in a taxi, during peak traffic hours, returning "home" from exciting days out exploring all the wonderful, diverse and interesting areas, you and others recommend on this forum.

We are really excited and looking forward to our 20 days in Cairo, Luxor and Aswan, armed with all the great advice learned from people such as youself, during the past twelve months that we have been reading the 'Cairo' and' Nile River Valley 'forums. A BIG Thank-you Darsh.

If you're near a Marriott, they'll likely have all the financial services you need...ATM's, bank, money changer....

Hi Speckle

welcome to Egypt any time ,wish you enjoy every single minute of your 20 days trip :)

when you arrive to the airport , you will buy your Visa from a BANK , in the arrival hall , in Terminal 2 where you will arrive there is many banks in the arrival hall to sell you the visa , it cost 15 US dollars only per person , just 2 stamps , one blue and one yellow , put them in any empty page in your passport and proceed to the passport controle, you can change money in the SAME bank you buy the visa from and ALSO from any other bank after the passport controle , official rates are always marked with big label , ALL BANKS in egypt have the same rate , it is fixed by the Central Bank of Egypt, so no need to look for many banks to choose a good rate, i agree with Darsh that you should , just for revision to revise the calculation of the bank clerck in the receipt , may be he got mistaken in calculations, which is rarely happen, but it is good to do revise it

the bank clerck can give you as much diminsions you want even in HALF pound :)

regarding to go from Airport to your friends in Mirage City , i prefer that when you are going out frm airport there are so many car hiring agents , like Hertz and Avis and many other companies egyptian ones that offer you a very nice car with a driver to take you any where, usually frm Airport to the Pyramids which is in the most farthest point of Cairo to airport the fee is almost 70 pounds , it means almsot 13 US dollars, so do not worry and i do not recomend to take the regular black and white taxi in order to aviod the negociation or playing fool by the driver as Darsh explained to you.

you will like Mirage City even if it is so far from every thing , but it is very quite, elegant and beautiful place , for example from there to the Pyramids it will take you almost one hour, the good about this city is that it is located on the RING road , so it mean not have to pass a lot through the crowdedness of the city of Cairo and its crazy traffic, even you will enjoy definitly how egyptian people drive in the traffic , you will feel it as a new experience

have fun and enjoy your trip
