All the major UK tour operators go to Egypt and are fine. Anything ATOL bonded iß OK. You can pay much more for a fancy brochure or website and get exactly the same holiday so check the details of what you are getting. There are other firms that do adventure style trips, camping in the desert, etc. There are also some firms that do academic trips led by serious Egyptologists. These tend to be more specialised and expensive.

It is also possible to construct your own trip by booking a flight and hotel and getting excursions locally. This is easy to do and may work out cheaply, but might be a bit daunting the first time you go.

Our tour to Giza and Cairo (from Port Said) last December 2012 was wonderful. We were very pleased with the knowledge (of ancient and more recent history), English language skills, and personality of our guide.

We also appreciated that he was flexible and helped us experience local cuisine. We only wish that there had been more time. In fact--there was some more time--but understandably he chose to avoid any risk about returning us to the ship late. We would have loved to have that extra hour exploring in the market in Cairo.

It was magical how he spoke softly to the trinket sellers at the Pyramids and caused them to leave us alone.

We had the luxury of a private tour for less, I would highly recommend using Egypt shore excursions ( http://www.egyptshoreexcursions.com ) for any visit to Egypt.

Highly recommended!

What worked best for me was to make my own travel arrangements. After confirming flights and hotel, and I researched local tour guides. There are many to pick from, so make sure you hire the right one. Most will let you make up your own itinerary, which was a big plus for me. There are plenty of reviews on here. Take your time and read them. We were there in December and felt safe and comfortable while out touring the sites.

I had arranged my tours in Egypt with local compnay, we were 13 from Port Said to Cairo and 15 for Alexandria. We visited the Step Pyramids first, then Memphis, had lunch in Giza, then the Great Pyramids and Sphinx. The drive was 3+ hours each way, and our driver was excellent - our Cairo tour was a total of 12+hours!

My tour was booked via the internet from our hotel room in Sharm el Sheikh. After checking egyptprivateexcursions dot com website I telephoned the office and had no problem in discussing our personalised requirements over the telephone.

The 1 day tour of the Museum of Antiquities, Pyramids and Sphynx was provided in our own private mini van with driver and guide (Mino). Picked us up from Cairo airport and took us where we wanted to go.

Mino was extremely knowledgable and knew his business. At the end of the day we were dropped back at the airport for our return flight to Sharm. This was a completely hassle free way to visit Cairo and both Mino and the driver made us feel welcome and safe in Cairo.

Without a doubt we would use this company again and the tour for 2 people worked out at about £50 per person (including entry to Museum, sphynx and Pyramids - although not mummys room at museum or entry inside the Pyramids) which was the cheapest tour we could find.

You could certainly pay alot more - we were quted £90 per person by another tour operator but quite honestly I cannot see what extra you would get for your money.
