Taxi to/in the pyramid site at Giza

I was at the pyramids a few weeks ago and took a camel trip around. All up it was about two and a half hours and a lot of fun.

I have to go back to Cairo in December and my mother will be with me on her first trip to Egypt - and may I say, she is very excited, but there is no way that she will be able to get onto a camel or a horse. (She is in her 80's and has had 3 knee replacements)

I noticed that there are roads within the site and someone that I spoke to at the Sound and Light show, said that they had toured by car as they had small children.

So are taxi's allowed within the site? Is there an extra charge for a vehicle? We will use the same driver and taxi that I used, when I was in Cairo. We don't need a guide. She just wants to see the pyramids up close!!

I been to the pyramid plateau several times but always walked the site. If I recall correctly, however, there is vehicle transport available and I’m sure someone else will provide the detals. I have, for example, seen people using horse drawn caleches on the road leading from the area of the sphinx to the pyramids. For the horse’s sake and your own, be wary of using these. The road is fairly steep with the odd pot hole and the horse cannot always manage the descent without slipping and sliding its way down.

Taxis very often enter the Giza plateau site by the rear/side entrance behind the Great pyramid (Khufu) opposite the entrance to the Mena House Oberoi hotel - this is where the coaches drive onto the site.

All that is needed I am sure, is for your driver to explain to the guards there that your mother cannot walk and perhaps a little baksheesh to 'smooth things along' and I doubt if you will have too much of a problem.

I used to enter the Giza complex by this entrance everyday when I was staying at the Mena House and saw many vehicles (taxis included) going in and out this way/

to my information , you can do it ,you will need to stop by the tourist police office at the pyramids area befor the entrance and meet with the police officer in charge an let him know your mom condation and he will send police car with your taxi to escort him around the area.and good luck

Yes taxi's can enter the plateau and yes you will have to pay a small fee for the taxi. Last time I did this it was about 5LE for a taxi.
