Simply the best guide, advisor and driver

We have just had a wonderful few days in Cairo thanks especially to Mostafa from Egypt Culture Tours (+202 385 2 1176) and his colleague and driver Mr Ali. We had only a little spare time, but at very short notice Mostafa, who is a qualified Egyptologist as well as a Tour Guide, took us under his wing. Not only did we see the Pyramids, Sphinx, Egyptian Museum,Islamic Cairo, Saladin's Citadel and the Coptic Christian area, but we also felt like house-guests in this beguiling city. Between them Mr Ali and Mostafa seemed to know everybody and everything, so even a quick stop for a mint tea became an interesting experience. Our only problem now is how to find the time to make a return trip!!!!

As well as the must-see visits, I'd have to say that our evening stroll through old Cairo was wonderful. The Ismaili community have done some wonderful restoration, but we were lucky to pass by a small courtyard concert by a traditional Egyptian 'troupe' (I'd call it)of musicians and singers. Without Mostafa's local knowledge (and Cairo charm of course), we'd have walked right past instead of disappearing down an alley and into the courtyard. We stayed there for some 45 minutes, enchanted by the traditional instruments, and colourful folksingers/song - hearing Mr. Ali and Mostafa joining in occasionally and then, chatting as friends about it over a mint tea, was special - and that was just one part of one brief evening in Old Cairo!

The funniest part of our trip was the taxi from the airport. Reaching the end of another flyover, our driver (NOT Mr. Ali, I hasten to add)puled over and using his one English phrse "one minute", hopped out, took an old petrol can from bonnet, funnel from the boot and trickled some fuel in to the tank. The fuel gauge continued to read 'absolute zero', but then the instrumentation generally was not 'state-of-the-art'! Anyway, with bated breath and some relief, we arrived at the hotel and although the taxi driver's helpfulness was not in question, we were very glad to link up with Mr. Ali for the rest of our transport.

If you contact Mostafa,(Mostafa@egyptculturetours.com) have as full a chat with him as you want and he will do as much or as little as you might want.

He was recommended by a friend with whom we dined on our first evening. His company had an 'away day' and Mostafa with his colleagues had come up trumps in every way.
