distances in Cairo

Hi there!I must go to Cairo in September. Want to know how far it is from the Longchamps Hotel in Zamalek to the International Convention Center. Are there buses? How much would it be fair to pay for a taxi? Thanks a lot.

1. Re: distances in Cairo

If you are referring to the International Fair and Exhibition Centre in Abbassiya, then it's quite a distance from Zamalek. For this reason I would definitely recommend taking a taxi instead of trying to negotiate the local bus system over that distance. The time it will take you to get out there (like any trip within the vast metropolis of Cairo) really depends upon the time of day and the day itself! To give you a rough idea, on a regular work day outside "rush hour" it may take 40 minutes to an hour, whereas during rush hour (7-10am and 3-6pm) you can reasonable expect the trip to take an hour to an hour and a half. On the weekend (Friday) it may only take 30-40 minutes. If the President decides to venture out of his official residence (which is in a nearby area) in his motorcade then the neighbouring streets may be shut down for hours! 8-/

A reasonable taxi fare between Zamalek and Abbassiya would be LE20-30, depending on the time of your journey. For this type of trip it's best to agree the fare with the taxi driver before you start.
