day trips outside Yangon (not air trips)

Can anyone recommend what to do if we have more days than we need in Yangon. Where to go? How to get there? Any good guides that you know of? Prefer to be off mainline tourist trail if possible.

A half day trip North to Bago is worth while and you can pop in to visit the CWGC at Taukkyan as it is on the same road.

SouthEast of Yangon is Thanlin with the Yele Paya on the lake. Your guide may also be able to find the ruins of the Portuguese HQ of Philip De Brito who was executed by impalement in 1613 for defiling Buddhist statues, so do not upset the Burmese!

To the SouthWest is Twante which is worth a visit as it is a typical Estuary town with a market, pottery manufacturing and a Mon paya -you can go by boat or car.
