Pyin Oo Lwin (Maymyo) to Mandalay

What is the best way to get from Pyin Oo Lwin (Maymyo) to Mandalay? I read that the train is very slow. The travel agent quoted me $24. per person for an AC bus. Seems high, but I really don't know what it normally is. Are there shared taxis or private taxis for the route? What would be the cost and best way to find them? Check the Pyin Oo Lwin website but could not get this details. Thanks for your reply.

There are a lot of shared taxi from Pyin Oo Lwin to Mandalay. 4 Person have to share, 3 at back seat and 1 at front and I think it will cost around 10$ per pax. But if you want the front seat you have to pay a bit more. You can find them easily near Clock Tower which is the center of Pwin Oo Lwin.

For 2000 kyat you can hop on to some pick up also. Front seat is a bit pricier. The conditions in the back are quite bad but it's a good way to blend in. :p

The best bet is to take a share taxi. After 5 PM it may be harder to find one and then it's better to use pick up.

The best way is by train, yes it's slow but what's the rush, it's all part of the experience. The Mandalay-Pyin oo Lwin and Thazi-Inle Lake train journeys were two of the most amazing scenic rides we did in Burma. At one point the train climbs a hillside on zigzags, not just transportation but one of the many highlights of the trip to Maymyo.

Trains run at 05:00 arriving Mandalay 09:45 and 17:40 arriving Mandalay 22:40.

From Mandalay trains leave at 04:45 and 14:45. We took the 04:45, so were on the train as dawn broke, calling at wayside village stations bathed in a red glow. Wonderful!

Morning train from Mandalay to PyinOo Lwin is ok. But Pyin Oo Lwin to Mandalay might not be good idea as train can leave later than scheduled time from Pyin Oo Lwin and as it is getting darker, views are not good to see. Coming down to Mandalay, best way is private car or shared taxi. Better take taxi in the morning or book ahead for exact time.
