Buying internal flight tickets for Myanmar.

There are currently four Airlines, used by tourists, in Myanmar.

The fifth one Myanmar Airways (as against MAI-Myanmar airways International) is not recommended and Agents will avoid booking on them for you wherever possible.

http://www.airbagan.com/

http://www.airkbz.com/flight-schedule.html

http://www.yangonair.com/

http://www.airmandalay.com/

All of them use ATr42/72 Turbo props and a couple have jet aircraft (F100) Their aircraft types and their network and schedule are on their web sites, but generally not their pricing.

Non of them currently have an eticket on-line booking system and some tickets are still hand written.

Some of them also have a web booking system whereby you can reserve tickets by email for collection and payment on arrival in Myanmar.

By far the best way is to reserve your tickets through a local Agent, there are many recommended on these forums. The cost will be no more than the ticket value, sometimes a few $'s less, but the big advantage is if there are schedule or time changes the Agent can contact you and advise of the change.

Do beware of a French Travel Agent masquerading as Yangon Air and Air Mandalay, their web site has a HYPHEN in the web name and looks genuine and they ask for 50% deposit, balance on collection in Myanmar. There ownership is shown at the foot of the page with a Paris and Bangkok address

Whilst many travellers have used them successfully there have been reports here and on Thorntree of tourists turning up and finding the airline had no booking and having to buy a new ticket. This happened to me once on their Lao-Air site.

The best that can happen is that you lose some money, the worst is that you lose your money and there are no seats available and you are stuck.

caveat emptor

If you are interested in airlines and schedules this link to Yangon will be useful. Not so many years ago there were only a few International airlines flying into Yangon-now the pages are full of arrivals and departures. Internal flights are listed but not logged for timings. Input RGN into the airport box on the right.

We're going to Myanmar in December and did a lot of research online. I can't believe that most of the websites are just inquiry emails only - even some official airline websites! I came across online booking site called visitmm and booked it with my credit card. I initially looked for flights and hotels separately, and was planning on booking hotels on agoda, but it was just too difficult to find hotels. It turns out the vacation package on visitmm worked out perfectly for me. I read in most of the blogs that you will need a guide to make life easier there and you need drivers. The packaged price came out ahead when I started combining some hotels and flights - I'm sure cars will be more expensive if I book it after I arrive. I don't want to bother running around and bring cash.

I just thought I'd share since I spent countless hours researching and reading posts! It was fun to research initially but then I was beginning to stress out about booking! It's www.visitmm.com and they don't advertise as much so some of you may not see it. I hope it helps all you travelers out there like me! I can't wait to get there. Now, I have to see if there is a way to go to SEA Games. Anybody knows how to do that?

For the anoraks amongst you, this overview of the expansion of ANA into Myanmar is interesting reading as it also includes an analysis of the carriers flying internationally into Myanmar.

Checking the flights that our in-country travel agent has booked for us against two of the websites that have been recommended, I can see that the recommended websites do not appear to be totally accurate. For example, oway.com.mm does not show any flights on Jan 10 from Nayaung U to Heho with Air Mandalay, but, Air Mandalay's website does show a flight and we have one booked that day (admittedly through Mandalay). And, www.visitmm.com shows no flights from Thande to Yangon on Jan 17, although there are indeed flights and we have ours booked already..

So--an argument to go with an in-country agent who can have access to the most up to date and complete schedule.

Or book direct with Air Mandalay or Asian Wings as you can see what schedule you are booking.

FYI Golden Myanmar Airlines has an online website that issues electronic tickets. I purchased tiks for MDL-RGN with 15kg additional baggage(they allow free 10k carry on which i didnt know about at the time). All in for two tiks we paid a little over 100USD. cheap cheap. Not sure how reliable it is though, not flying till mid dec. Also I just realised its the cheapie version of MAI which has a terrible safety record - but hopefully this one will have new pilots along with the new plane.

You are confusing MAI with MA. the former is the International all jet airline, the latter Myanmar Airways is the one tourists should avoid.

Incidentally a Golden Myanmair A320-232 has recently been repainted in the Golden livery at Bournemouth,England and re-registered XY-AGT,it is ex ex Air Astana.

It is now operational on the Yangon-Mandalay route.

oh dear thanks for that! I will remember to tell the agent no MA!! Yes GMA has also added a flight from Mandalay to Imphal India, but I dont know how regular this is going to be. I heard(unconfirmed) that this is also in the <$50 range. Would have been great if I had known before I dropped the unnecessary 500$ to fly with jet airways/thai.
