As long as you stay away from any local irregulariteis i suppose? Since a couple of journalists (not regular tourists ok) from abroad died during revolts.

I did visit Myanmar in 2006/2007 and never felt un-safe anywhere in the country. It's my absolute number 1 country to visit.

I did hear a lot of different stories on visa the last couple of days. New rules: i.e. if 'your country' has a Myanmar consulat of ambassy, you can't get visa on arrival anymore, unless you have a full travelplan including arrival/departure date, all addresses of accomodation etc.

Anyone had the same info somewhere else heard?

Our passports are on their way to Washington, DC. Yes, you have to apply for the visa before arrival. Our travel agent informed us recently!!! It is due to the elections in November, I suppose.

Visas for Myanmar need to be obtained from an Embassy. At Kuala Lumpur it was mayhem and madness. Website says two photos but when you get the forms, of which there are three, you see that three are needed plus a copy of your passport and if you want a visa the same day then a copy of the airticket. The visa was approved the same day for double the normal fee.

Thanks alot for the update Sailor! How much was the express/one day visa? Is it anything like the embassy in Bangkok where you have to take a ticket when you enter & they only give out so many visas a day on a first come, first serve basis?

Cheers

Express visa was RM150 and there didn't appear to be any limit on how many same day visas were issued. Believe me there were a lot. Had to show a ticket. Good luck

Hi there,

can anyone say: was a letter from your employer vouching for your identity and you having a job needed in Kuala Lumpur?

This was required by the embassy in Colombo (Sri Lanka), but they also send the passports to Myanmar rather than being allowed to process them themselves.

Thanks

Kat

Sounds like they're mighty strict in Colombo, were they refusing people without that information? How long were they saying a visa would take then if they had to send passports from SL to Myanmar?

There's been no reports that you need evidence of employment or a letter from your employer at the embassy in KL.

Yes, they refused me as well - I'm travelling for a year and don't have a job on hold. In the end it turned out that even if I DID have a letter from my employer, they were using some delaying tactics to keep foreigners out of Myanmar before and during elections.

You also needed to handwrite a letter explaining that you were not going to engage in any political activity during your stay within the country.

With sending the passports, they were expecting it to take at least 4 weeks with, of course, no guarantee of a visa.

4 weeks!! Geez, so asking them for an express, same day visa was completely out the question then:-)

The letter about engaging in political activities in pretty standard, seems like they don't want to be wasting any ink in their printer though if you have to handwrite it yourself.

It might be the case that some embassies are asking for letters of employment around the election time, certainly haven't heard of anyone having troubles procuring a visa without producing one. The fact that you don't have a job on hold is irrelevant, the application just asks for your occupation, not whether you're actively employed or not.

Thanks for the update KTN, good luck with the visa.
