Travel with a child- ideas?

I will be traveling to Vanuatu with my 5 year old in September for 11 days. Where would be best to stay that is clean, quiet, safe and mid range in price? We are looking to explore the area and want to meet the locals. Im not too keen on touristy activities. Are there any 'must sees' for children??

Thanks :)

There are some good deals going at Le Lagon at the moment that include airfares and accommodation. There are many pools there, a kids club and you are just a canoe ride away from cultural villages and performances (they do some on site too and organise other activities & excursions). You are also just a short ride away from Erakor Island which has a good little sand beach that is shallow and good for little kids. It depends on your budget and if you want self catering option etc too.

Do a round island tour and also take the 5yo old to the local markets for lunch and meet the mamas (they love kids).

Catch a bus out to Hideaway Island where you can swim, relax and feed the fish that come right into the shallow areas and eat from your hand if you take some bread in.

Another good day trip is Lelepa Island. Also the Coongoola Day trip to visit the turtle sanctuary.

See other reviews listed under Things To Do on the left of this page. Enjoy your planning!

To meet the locals I recommend to go to Pele Island, stay there for one night and visit the (pre)school. Teach them a Kiwi song and a game and let them teach you a local song and game.

There is also a big playground between the local market and the tourist market / Nambawan Cafe at the harbourside. And you'll love the pizzas and smoothies at the Nambawan Cafe.
