WW2 museum at Port Vila

Hi we`re off early November for our first Vanuatu holiday, 7 nights at Le Lagon. Have been reading the posts for awhile and found them very helpful thanks.

Was very interested in a mention of a WW2 museum and also nearby snorkeling on plane wrecks, but haven`t been able to find out where they are. We love snorkeling and would really appreciate hearing about these places from anyone

There is a small roadside WW2 museum around the other side of the island. I think its closer to havannah than port vila. I am sure the man would tell you that Catriona Rowntree from getaway visited him. Has anyone else been told that by him?

He sells old coke bottles (original) and a few other bits and pieces. Had a lot of ammunition shells etc when we last went there

The round the island tour I went on stopped there, and the driver also pointed out other WW2 sights of interest eg a semi-submerged tank, an airfield.

The WWII museum is like no other. It is located at North Efate and is a popular stop off point on the round island tours. The NiVanuatu owner has personally collected most of the memorabilia from the water near the museum. He tells a good yarn and is quite a showman. He also sells the coke bottles for a very fair price given that he, or one of his robust family members, may well have had to freedive to collect them.

You may also enjoy a visit to the National Museum and Cultural Centre which is just behind Parliament House, a couple of blocks from The Melanesian. Interesting displays such as sand painting can be seen here as well as a Chief's Nakamal.

Another fascinating thing for history fans is the little display outside the public library. This is in the main street of downtown Vila.

The submerged tanks are at Undine Bay. Grab yourself a Jasons map from your accommodation and study North Efate. If you intend to go on a round island tour, speak to the guide and see if they can allow you some time there, otherwise make friends with a reputable looking bus driver and see if he will take you on a full day trip. Be sure the bus is in good condition and secure a price before you agree to anything. Otherwise you may like to hire a car and drive yourself there.

Hope this helps,

Jen
