Family surf holiday with toddlers

We are looking to travel to the Solomon islands with a 4 year old and a 2year old. Has anyone got any suggestions as to where to stay. There also must be surf beaks nearby. thanks!!!

Depends on how prepared you are to rough it?

I could recommend a village stay in Malaita (no mod cons) or a low key resort in Central Province (Maravagi) which has power and en suite bathrooms with cold water. Both of these have surf nearby, although you usually need to be taken there by boat. Locals would be happy to provide child care for a small fee.

Surfsolomons.com offer escorted surfing trips, but I am not sure if they can manage small children.

You will need someone else to comment on the Western Province resorts.

We stayed at fatboys over christmas with 3 young children and it was great for the kids which meant it was great for us. The is surf there sometimes but it is not very consistent. They had a few old surfboards there you can borrow and you will need to get a boat trip out to a break. My husband surfs and he thought that the area had potential for good surf but it wasnt breaking when we were there.

Agree with My_travelling from brisbane comments. Out west will be better suited to travelling with Children. As they mentioned also, surf is inconcistent out there, but when it is on it is very good (and you'll probably have it to yourself).

In Gizo, two of the nearby surf spots are Titiana and Pailongge, with exposed left and right hand reef breaks respectively and very reliable surf. Summer offers the optimum conditions with clean ground swells being more frequent than wind swells.

Accommodation options for Gizo I would recomend are Fatboys (as mentioned already) and if you want more budget and basic something like Naqua motel. Note, Sanbis is another nice resort there but they have a no kids under 12 policy now.

Another option to consider is Zipolo Habu. This is near Munda. They also have surf breaks but inconsistent. I've been with a friend through there who pointed out a break in his trip a month earlier they were coming through at 3 - 5m sets. But on the day we went past were merely little mal sliders. Zipolo Habu, like Fat boys, has plenty of other things to do also in the area. See welkamsolomons.com/places/…index.html for more info.

Other places to consider, pending your interest out west is Tetepare which is "near" Zipolo (they have turtle hatching on now until about end of March) and Kolombangara near Gizo which has mountain walks and treks. welkamsolomons.com/places/…main.html

I wouldn't recomend Malaita if it is a quick visit and you are looking at a more general holiday experience. If you want to get right off the beating track and explore, then Malaita would be the option to consider.

Depends how long you're intending to go for also as well. Any more questions let us know. Hope this helps.

Thanks

Wonderful thanks so much for all the handy tips and advice. I think maybe 8 nights would be plenty on an island..

Did you go? Where did you end up staying? We are hoping to go in October with our 4 year old and 8 month old. Honest opinion on if it is suitable especially for the little one. My husband and i love to get off the beated track but are trying to play it a bit safer travelling with the kids.
