Where to spend New Year's Eve?

My husband and I are planning a trip to Buenos Aires with side trips to Colonia and Montevideo.

We'd like to stay away from the ultra chic masses in Punta del Este but would still like to enjoy a New Year's Eve celebration.

Can anyone recommend where we should schedule ourselves to be on New Year's Eve?

Any suggestions much appreciated!

We would like to be in Punta del Este area as well but are finding it impossible to get a hotel room - at least for less than seven (7) nights - after 25 December and before 6 January 2010. Nothing is available anywhere in the vicinity.

it will be a miracle at that time of the year if you find a hotel renting for less than 3 nights. An option is to rent an apartment, there you can find more options and some owners will agree to rent it for 2 days but youll have to do a strong research

The major hotels in BA all have special dinners and celebrations, as do many restaurants. I assume the same is true in Montevideo. I don't know about Colonia. As milu said, Punta is very difficult, at least in advance. It might be possible to just show up and find something last minute (the lesser hotels don't always sell all their rooms for the 7 night minimum, and offer them for less time at the last minute). The fireworks along miles of beaches in the Punta area are really worth seeing; many of the beaches are sweeping horseshoe-shapes, so you get some spectacular angles on the fireworks over water with coastline and other fireworks going on for many miles in the background.

Colonia has special dinner at most of the restaurants, with party included. At midnight everybody goes outside to watch the fireworks, for what the coast road Rambla is the best place, because you can see the 3 five star hotels making a competition of the nicest fireworks, and at the horizon you can see the lights from Buenos Aires. After an hour or so, the party is on the roads, historical district has a band in the square, they play the 70´s hits and young and old gathers to have a good time.

We found a hotel in Montevideo for New Years Eve. Any suggestions for events for that night? Thanks to all who replied.
