Punta in May- worth the trip?

Hi, I have a conference in Montevideo next week (mid-May). Is it worth a trip to Punta for a day or two or is it really a ghost town? Are any decent restaurants open in the off-season or is it depressing? Any advice is really appreciated.

Well, the weather forecast predicts sunny days. If you visit Punta del Este for the weekend I believe it worth the trip.

You can take the bus there (almost 2 hours) (easy and safe)...it seems shorter than 2 hours though. If you get there and decide to come back then just take a late bus back the same day. If you like it..then stay. But it will be dead. Even in mid March it was starting to be a ghost town.

OK- I can now answer my own question. We went to Punta del Este in mid-May. We arrived on Thursday and it was pretty quiet. The weather was sunny and lovely (not warm enough to swim) and we enjoyed a nice walk and bike ride. We had a hard time finding open restaurants in the center, but we managed to eat a sandwich. Things picked up a little on Friday and Saturday. A few more stores (including Prune, the only one in Uruguay), cafes and restaurants were open for the weekend people (not too many). I am glad we went. It was peaceful and we saw a side of Punta that we could miss going in January. I was amazed at how beautiful the ocean was, too. It was definitely off-season, but not depressing.
