Where in Uruguay?

We are planning a trip mid-December for 8 people, different ages, along the coast of Uruguay. However a lot of Punta sounds very generic, overpriced and exclusive, which is not our scene.

I am looking for something that has some activity and night life, but more importantly beautiful remote scenery, nice walks and the real Uruguay. My guide book tells me that it is only the rich of BA that come to Punta Del Este.

Thanks for your help

I am not sure you can get both....The coast of the Atlantic beyond Punta del Este is fairly underdeveloped, still remote and very beautiful. The quality of the services in some places may not be up to american standards. No nightlife either. You may want to search in the Internet places like Punta del Diablo, La Pedrera, Cabo Polonio, Parque Santa Teresa. See if that's what you are looking for....otherwise, stay in Punta and do day trips....although it is true is a "rich and famous" kind of place, you do not want to miss it either. There are beautiful places around Punta as well, and a satellite city (Maldonado) that meets the criteria of the "real" Uruguay....

I am glad to help =

deedeigan ....

In Uruguay other than punta del este , you will find several places on the water of the riverplate atlantic ocean , which are nice but not overpriced .

ATLANTIDA , PIRIAPOLIS , CHIHUAHUA PORTEZUELO , this places have hotels acomodations and have a beutifull scenery and activities too ,

Also there are several places clothing optional and famous for the food and suculent stakes and chimichurri ( that is a famous bbq seasoning around the world )

So enjoy Uruguay I wil I will be downthere from october until april and hopefully will go back to USA , or may be Spain !!

my e mail is alalbs@aol.com,

hope I could help some ...

I went to Punta del Este in late Dec. 2003. Glad to have gone but it was overrated & pricey in my opinion. It's not much of a big town either. Underdeveloped as earlier stated. The casino seemed like the biggest thing there. In any case, I'm still glad I went and brought back pictures for my students (I'm a high school Spanish teacher).

I prefer big cities and so I loved Montevideo. Colonia was decent for a day which was where I stayed upon exiting the ferry I took from Buenos Aires. (Hopefully you're goin' to BA where there's WAY too much to see/enjoy)

Back to Uruguay, I didn't see much night life in Punta del Este besides restaurants that were open late. I remember Dec. 30th it was HOT and then the 31st it only went up to 65 degrees.

And I had to book my PDE hotel on orbitz since it was near impossible to trick a hotel to allow me to book less than a 7-day stay.

There are other places near Punta del Este that maybe you can enjoy, and do not be afraid that in mid december there are not crowds in the uruguayan coast , try searching for maldonado and Rocha , and www.mintur.gub.uy and uruguaytotal.com.uy / turismo

If you like birdwatching, riding horses, both of places has it and you can enjoy the beach too
