Want a day or two in Uruguay from Iguassu

My boyfriend and I are travelling from Rio to Buenos Aires via Iguassu but we would also like to take in a day or two in Uruguay as its meant to be a wonderful country. We do not necessarily have to see Montevideo.

We are on a year long journey around the world so on a tight budget so hope to get buses to and from the mentioned above.

Any advice would be fantastic, thank you!

Iguazu is great, the point that paraguay, brazil and Argentina meet and the huge falls. To visit Uruguay its best to go by bunquebus to Colononia from Bs As, or from Tigre 30kms north of Bs As in the delta.

best places to stay depends on budget. Recolletta if you have lots of money, good quality GBP35, but there are many backpack hostels near the centre ie around the obelisk, respectable at GBP8 per night.

living is very cheap here, steak and salads plus bottle of wine is GBP5 from sigue la vaca (follow the cow) but get there early eg 9.30pm or late 12.oo.

at night discos and tango/milonga shows (around GBP5) open late at around 11am and finish at dawn the next day but tourist tango is from 9pm to midnight and expensive (GBP40)

other trips are to the delta at Tigre, if you go to the gato blanco restaurant for lunch you have to catch a bus barge (there is no other transport)

and also look at coach trips on cama micros (sleeping buses). I went for 5 days to Iguazu including 4 nights at 3 star hotel there for GBP110. Best towns to visit are mendoza and salta near the high andes

further south is Puerta madryn where you can go whale watching from now to December and walk with penguins all year round but best in jan/feb when they have just bred and there are 500,000 of them in puerto tombo

if you have time think of a trip to valparaiso in chile (great sea food), easily excessible from mendoza

if you want blackpool by the sea, go to mar del plata, lots of shows, casino, sea beaches etc (GBP6 on the train)

there are many Irish influences - admiral browne started the navy here but there are also towns like Lynch, Mc Kenna, Hughes, Murphy etc

my daughter teaches at Longford

kind regards
