two nights in uruguay

I am planning a weekend away from BA in mid March. I know that two nights isn't much time but wondered if anyone could suggest an itinerary. Thought about taking the ferry to Colonia and spending the morning there. Then head to Montevideo for lunch/dinner and spend the night. The next morning we could drive to a beach town for the day / night. Then head back to the ferry to BA the next day.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Boston!

Montevideo has a magnificent beach, complete with a long beachfront promenade reminiscent of the French Riviera and Rio. You'd probably prefer Montevideo's beach, unless you crave seclusion.

When we went, we drove. It's about 300 miles one-way and, depending on how you look at it, either boring or, as we saw it, rather interesting.

The route through Argentina takes you past Tigre and other suburban cities, then across the Parana River meadow country (Mesopotamia as the Argentine call it) over two long cable-stayed bridges. You pass through downtown Gualeguaychu, known for having Argentina's best Carnaval (Mardi Gras), except that you've just missed Carnaval.

We like the lush Uruguay farm country and the canyons of eucalyptus and pine trees planted along the roadway. Some say they find this boring or tedious. Only you know best.

You'll need a three-day long weekend to make the trip and have your two evenings and two mornings in Montevideo. On the other hand, with a rental car, you'll probably do better than the cost of airfare for two and you have the luxury of your own wheels for getting around.

Happy travels!
