Punta is a world class beach resort with everything one could want in a resort, in season. June is the depths of off-season. It will still be beautiful (the water, the beaches, the countryside), but nothing much will be happening and about the only people around will be the year-rounders. If you were to be there on a weekend, you could till enjoy some fine restaurants, but during the week even most of the restaurants, except those catering to the year-rounders, will be closed.

Thank you for the info. Is it that much of a resort area that the restaurants close during the week during the off season? How far is this place from Montevideo?

It's 1 1/2 hours by car from downtown Montevideo, a little over one hour from the Montevideo airport. There are non-stop flights from Buenos Aires, also, but only 1-2/day in off-season.

Not sure what the question about "that much of a resort" is getting at, but remember, Uruguay is not in the Caribbean. The beach season is short, and in June the weather will be about like December on the coast of South Carolina. In short, it's not beach weather, so there are no tourists to justify the nice restaurants staying open all week. Some shut down for the entire off-season. Others open on weekends because some people with homes or apartments in Punta do come over from BA or Montevideo for the weekends to enjoy the views and get away from the cities. The year-round population of Punta del Este is about 15,000-20,000; the in-season population can hit 320,000-340,000.

There have been several articles on Punta del Este in the NY Times, New York Magazine, Conde Nast Traveler, The Washington Post, and probably other places over the last 3-4 years. You might want to look them up through Google to learn more. There are also web sites like www.puntaweb.com (and others). Finally, you can see the place for yourself through detailed satellite photos, right down to cars on the street, by zooming in on the area in GoogleEarth.
